Karyn and Christopher’s InterContinental Edinburgh The George wedding was a brilliant Easter celebration in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town, with bridal preparations in Forthview, a Humanist ceremony in the King’s Hall and a relaxed drinks reception in The Library.

After the ceremony, we headed onto George Street and into Queen Street Gardens for a short newlywed photo session before returning to the hotel for dinner, speeches and a packed evening dance floor in the King’s Hall.

Morning Preparations in Forthview

Karyn’s morning began in Forthview, where Jonathon photographed the final stages of bridal preparations with her bridesmaids while Claire headed downstairs to capture Christopher, the guests and the atmosphere building outside the hotel.

George Street was already lively, with the piper attracting plenty of attention from passers-by. Upstairs, Karyn revealed the Rosa Clará gown she had managed to keep secret even from some of her closest friends, with her hair styled in soft waves by Babu Edinburgh.

Those last few minutes before leaving for the ceremony gave us a lovely mixture of details, portraits and completely natural reactions as everyone realised the wedding was finally about to begin.

A Humanist Ceremony in the King’s Hall

Karyn and Christopher exchanged vows in the King’s Hall in front of around 140 family and friends, with their Humanist ceremony led by Karen Dickson of the Humanist Society Scotland.

Their ceremony included readings, plenty of laughter and a traditional quaich, with the newlyweds sharing a 12-year-old Balvenie single malt before being announced as husband and wife.

We photographed the ceremony from different positions around the King’s Hall, capturing not only Karyn and Christopher but the reactions of the people around them — one of the things we particularly love about photographing ceremonies in this room.

Drinks in The Library & Photos Around the New Town

After the ceremony, everyone moved into The Library for champagne, canapés and congratulations. It gave Karyn and Christopher time to enjoy those first few moments of being married before we slipped away for a short newlywed photo session.

We walked to Queen Street Gardens for relaxed portraits among the trees before heading back towards The George.

On the way, we stopped at the George Street roundabout for one of our favourite photographs from the day. With traffic moving around them, horns sounding and people calling out congratulations, it felt completely Edinburgh — lively, slightly chaotic and great fun.

Wedding Breakfast & Speeches in the King’s Hall

Back at The George, the King’s Hall had been transformed for the wedding breakfast, with tall arrangements of white flowers and greenery, candles, mirrors and fairy lights creating a completely different atmosphere from the ceremony earlier in the day.

Karyn and Christopher were piped into the room to a huge welcome from their guests, followed by dinner and speeches from Christopher, Karyn’s brother, and the best men.

Speeches are always one of our favourite parts of a wedding to photograph because so much happens away from the person holding the microphone — laughter, tears, glances across the room, and reactions that disappear in seconds.

Dancing the Night Away

Later, the King’s Hall changed character again as the tables made way for the evening celebrations.

After cutting their four-tier wedding cake, Karyn and Christopher took to the dance floor for their first dance before their guests joined them and the party properly got underway.

It was a brilliant end to a wedding that showed just how much variety The George offers in a single day — from the light and views of Forthview to the intimacy of The Library and a packed dance floor in the King’s Hall.
