After photographing 166 weddings at Edinburgh City Chambers, we’ve worked in its ceremony rooms in just about every combination of guest numbers, seasons and wonderfully unpredictable Edinburgh weather. Each room has a different feel — and, from a photographer’s point of view, different strengths.

Here’s what we’ve learned about each one and what we’d consider when choosing the right room for your wedding.

The Wee Neuk — Best for a true elopement

Room Capacity: Couple + 2 witnesses + photographer

The Wee Neuk is City Chambers’ smallest ceremony space, designed for the couple and two witnesses. We’ve photographed many ceremonies here, and it’s ideal if you want the legal part of your wedding to be intimate and uncomplicated before heading into Edinburgh for photographs or a celebration afterwards.

Our photographer’s view: because the room is very small, photography here is about discreetly documenting genuine reactions rather than moving around to find lots of different angles.

Alexander Suite — Our most frequently photographed option

Room Capacity: Up to 36 plus the couple.

The Alexander Suite at Edinburgh City Chambers is a fantastic choice for couples who want an intimate ceremony while still having enough space for family and friends. It’s one of the City Chambers rooms we know particularly well, having photographed so many weddings here.

Our photographer’s view: we love the natural light, space and character of the Alexander Suite. It’s intimate and stylish, but what makes it particularly useful photographically is the variety available within the suite itself. The separate Guest Lounge and Signing Room give us different backgrounds for photographs without taking you away from your guests.

Whenever the weather allows, we normally photograph family groups outdoors. Natural light is flattering, we have more space to work and the surroundings immediately outside City Chambers give the photographs a real sense of Edinburgh.

European Room — An Elegant Choice for a Larger City Chambers Wedding

Room capacity: Up to 90 guests.

The European Room at Edinburgh City Chambers is a brilliant option if you’d like a larger ceremony while retaining the character and intimacy of a City Chambers wedding. There’s plenty of room for family and friends, but it still feels personal rather than overwhelming.

Our photographer’s view: one thing we particularly love about the European Room is its natural light. The large windows overlooking the Quadrangle bring plenty of daylight into the room, which is fantastic for both your ceremony photographs and those spontaneous moments immediately afterwards.

The extra space also lets us photograph your ceremony discreetly from different positions, capturing not only the two of you but also the reactions of your family and friends. Once you’re married, we’re perfectly placed for photographs in the Quadrangle before heading onto the Royal Mile and into Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Council Chamber — A Grand Setting for a Larger Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding

Room capacity: Up to 120 guests

The Council Chamber at Edinburgh City Chambers is the largest and grandest of the ceremony spaces, making it a great choice when you’re planning a City Chambers wedding with a bigger guest list. The room’s scale also gives us more opportunities to capture the people around you and all those little reactions that form such an important part of the story.

Our photographer’s view: with a larger Council Chamber wedding, we recommend allowing an extra ten minutes after your ceremony before rushing into group photographs or heading off around Edinburgh. Give your family and friends time to hug you, congratulate you and enjoy the moment.

For us, those few minutes are photography gold. The hugs, laughter, happy tears and completely unscripted reactions can’t be recreated later in the day — and they’re often among our favourite photographs from a City Chambers wedding.

Afterwards, we can organise your family photographs before taking a short walk into Edinburgh’s Old Town for your couple portraits.

Other Rooms We Use for Wedding Photography at Edinburgh City Chambers

The ceremony rooms aren’t the only useful spaces inside Edinburgh City Chambers. Depending on your booking, you may also have access to additional rooms that can be particularly useful for photographs, signing paperwork, spending a few quiet minutes together or escaping Edinburgh’s less-than-cooperative weather.

After 166 weddings at City Chambers, we’ve learned which of these spaces work particularly well photographically and when they’re most useful.

Signature Room — Perfect for Pre-Ceremony Portraits

The Signature Room is also used as a pre-ceremony room, giving one partner somewhere private to wait while guests are seated and everything is prepared for the ceremony.

Our photographer’s view: those few minutes before the ceremony are a lovely opportunity for some relaxed bride or groom portraits. Rather than turning it into a formal photoshoot, we can make use of the room and available light to create a handful of beautiful photographs while capturing the anticipation just before you walk into your ceremony.

It’s also a chance to photograph quieter details and expressions that are easy to miss once the wedding gets underway.

Guest Lounge at Edinburgh City Chambers

Guest Lounge — A Very Useful Wet-Weather Plan B

The Guest Lounge forms part of the Alexander Suite and gives you and your guests additional space away from the main ceremony room. It also gives us another useful photographic setting without leaving Edinburgh City Chambers.

Our photographer’s view: whenever possible, we prefer to photograph family groups outdoors. Natural light is flattering, we have more room to work and the surroundings outside City Chambers give the photographs an unmistakable sense of Edinburgh.

But we’re also realistic — this is Edinburgh! If it’s pouring with rain, the Guest Lounge gives us a genuinely useful Plan B for family photographs rather than standing around hoping the weather improves.

Diamond Jubilee Room — Perfect for Candid Celebrations

The Diamond Jubilee Room at Edinburgh City Chambers is an event space rather than a ceremony room, giving newlyweds and their guests somewhere to gather after the ceremony, enjoy a canapé and a glass of bubbly, and properly enjoy those first few moments of being married.

Our photographer’s view: this is a fantastic space for candid wedding photography. Rather than immediately disappearing for formal photographs, you can spend time with the people who’ve come to celebrate with you — and that’s when we get the hugs, laughter, congratulations and spontaneous reactions that can’t be staged later.

We love simply stepping back and documenting these moments as they happen. Give yourselves time to enjoy them; they’re often some of the best photographs of the day.

We’ve photographed Edinburgh City Chambers weddings in every month of the year, and one thing we’ve learned is never to assume the Royal Mile will look the same when you walk back outside.

Weekends can be busy year-round, while summer and Festival season bring considerably larger crowds. But a busy Royal Mile doesn’t mean you’re going to spend your newlywed photo session posing awkwardly in front of hundreds of tourists.

We know the nearby closes, arches and quieter corners where we can disappear from the crowds in minutes. If one of our usual locations is unexpectedly busy, we’ll simply change the route.

For couples who aren’t used to Edinburgh at its busiest, the atmosphere can feel a little overwhelming at first. That’s where experience really matters. We’ll keep things relaxed, guide you through the best locations and keep an eye on the time so you can enjoy yourselves rather than worrying about what’s happening around you.

Sometimes we’ll embrace the bustle; sometimes we’ll escape it. Either way, the Royal Mile is part of the fun.

You Don’t Need Hours for Brilliant Wedding Photographs

We know most couples don’t want to spend half their wedding day having photographs taken — and you absolutely don’t need to.

After hundreds of weddings in Edinburgh, we know exactly how much can be achieved around City Chambers in a relatively short time.

With around 20 minutes, we can create a lovely collection of newlywed portraits on the Royal Mile, around St Giles’ Cathedral and in the nearby closes and arches.

Give us 40–60 minutes, and we can explore a little farther. Depending on your plans, the weather and how quickly you’d like to get back to the celebrations, locations such as Victoria Street and the Grassmarket can all become possibilities.

Because we know the quickest routes and which locations work well together, there’s no need to wander aimlessly around Edinburgh searching for photographs. We’ll make the most of the time you give us, get you looking fabulous and then send you off to enjoy a very well-earned celebratory drink.

Rain Doesn’t Ruin an Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding

Edinburgh weather has never been particularly interested in wedding plans. Fortunately, after 166 City Chambers weddings, we’ve become rather good at Plan B.

The beautiful stone arches within Edinburgh City Chambers give us sheltered photography options without even leaving the venue. Across the Royal Mile, the covered areas and historic architecture around the rear of St Giles’ Cathedral provide us with more possibilities when the rain arrives.

We also know the nearby closes and sheltered spots where we can continue photographing without spending your entire session battling the weather.

If the rain is particularly determined, some City Chambers bookings also give us useful indoor options. The Guest Lounge, for example, can provide an alternative location for family photographs when we’d rather not send everyone outside into horizontal rain.

We always prefer beautiful natural light when conditions allow, but preparation and local knowledge mean we don’t need perfect weather to create brilliant photographs.

And if the rain stops for ten minutes? We’ll know exactly where to take you.

Group Photographs Are Much Easier With a Plan

Family photographs don’t need to become the slow, painful part of your wedding day.

Before your City Chambers wedding, we’ll ask you for a list of the group photographs you’d like. We can then organise them into an efficient order, so we’re not standing around on the day trying to work out who’s needed next.

We usually recommend doing your family and group photographs immediately after the ceremony, before heading away for your newlywed portraits. That means your family and friends can relax and start celebrating while the two of you disappear with us for a short wander around Edinburgh.

When the weather is suitable, we prefer the City Chambers Quadrangle. Its natural light, architecture and space make it ideal for groups.

If it’s raining, particularly windy or simply freezing cold, we can adapt. Depending on your City Chambers booking and the rooms available to you, we can use suitable indoor spaces rather than forcing everyone outside just because that was Plan A.

The secret is simple: have the list ready, get everyone together, keep it moving and make it fun.

Confetti at Edinburgh City Chambers Needs a Little Planning

Confetti isn’t permitted inside Edinburgh City Chambers or within the Quadrangle, so we can’t simply line everyone up outside your ceremony room and start throwing it.

Fortunately, there’s a very easy alternative.

Once we’ve finished your family photographs, we can head out onto the Royal Mile and organise your confetti shot there, where permitted. It takes very little time, gets everybody involved and usually creates brilliantly chaotic photographs full of laughter and reactions.

We’ll organise everyone, explain what to do and make sure you’re actually visible underneath the avalanche!

If you’re planning confetti, we’d recommend choosing biodegradable confetti and checking the latest local restrictions before your wedding, as rules can change.

August Really Is Different

If you’re getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers during August, there are a few things we’d plan differently.

The Edinburgh Festivals transform the Old Town. The Royal Mile becomes considerably busier, with performers, visitors and street activity filling an area that’s already one of Scotland’s busiest tourist destinations. The atmosphere can be fantastic — but the logistics require a little more thought.

During Festival-period restrictions, vehicle access around the Royal Mile can be limited or closed, so don’t assume your wedding car or taxi will always be able to pull up directly outside City Chambers. In our experience, couples and guests may need to be dropped nearby — George IV Bridge is one practical alternative we’ve used — and walk the final few minutes.

We’d therefore allow a little extra time for arrivals and make sure guests know before the wedding day that they may have a short walk to the venue.

Photography needs a slightly different approach too. Victoria Street, the Royal Mile and other famous locations can be extremely busy during August, so rigidly insisting on a predetermined route doesn’t make much sense. Instead, we’ll judge what’s happening on the day.

We know quieter closes and arches are only minutes from City Chambers, where we can escape the crowds, and the narrow Old Town streets can actually give us beautiful, flattering light as well as a little breathing space away from the High Street.

But we don’t always want to hide the crowds.

Festival Edinburgh has an energy all its own, and sometimes that colour, movement and atmosphere in the background creates photographs that could only have been taken in Edinburgh in August.

The trick isn’t trying to make the Royal Mile look empty.

It’s knowing when to embrace the madness and when to disappear around the corner.

Best Photo Locations After an Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding

One of the great things about getting married at Edinburgh City Chambers is that you don’t need to travel across the city for brilliant wedding photographs. Step outside and you’re already in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, with the Royal Mile, historic closes and some of our favourite photography locations only minutes away.

After 166 City Chambers weddings, we know which locations work well together and, just as importantly, what’s realistically achievable with the photography time you have.

If We Have 20–30 Minutes

You can achieve far more than you might expect.

We normally begin around the City Chambers Quadrangle, before heading towards Parliament Square and St Giles’ Cathedral. From there we can use the Royal Mile and a couple of our favourite nearby closes and arches.

Because everything is so close together, there’s no need to rush. Even twenty relaxed minutes can give you a surprisingly varied collection of photographs while keeping you close to your guests and whatever you’ve planned next.

This is also the route we’d adapt if the Royal Mile is particularly busy or Edinburgh’s weather isn’t cooperating.

If We Have Around One Hour

With a little more time, we can explore more of the Old Town while keeping the photography relaxed.

We’ll normally start with the locations immediately surrounding City Chambers before making our way towards Victoria Street and the Grassmarket, choosing the exact route based on the light, weather, and how busy Edinburgh is that day.

We don’t work from a rigid checklist of photographs. After hundreds of Edinburgh weddings, we know plenty of alternatives, so if somewhere is packed with tourists, covered in scaffolding or being enthusiastically occupied by a bagpiper, we’ll simply use somewhere better.

If We Have Around Two Hours

Two hours gives us the freedom to create a much more varied Edinburgh wedding gallery without rushing.

After photographing around City Chambers, the Royal Mile and nearby closes, we can continue towards Victoria Street and the Grassmarket, finishing around The Vennel for its fantastic view towards Edinburgh Castle.

Depending on your plans, the weather and where you’re heading afterwards, Princes Street Gardens can also be an option.

That doesn’t mean two hours of continuous posing. We’ll walk, chat, explore and photograph the two of you naturally along the way. The aim is to enjoy Edinburgh together, not turn your wedding day into an endurance photoshoot.

Do We Need to Decide Our Photo Locations Before the Wedding?

No — and we’d actually recommend keeping things flexible.

We’ll discuss the kind of photographs you love beforehand, but the best route can depend on the weather, light, crowds, road closures and time of year. Edinburgh during the Festival is a very different place from Edinburgh on a quiet Tuesday morning in February.

Because we know the Old Town so well, we can make those decisions for you on the day. You don’t need to worry about whether Victoria Street is busy or where we’ll go if it rains — that’s our job.

Yes. Couples often refer to the marriage service at Edinburgh City Chambers as Edinburgh Registry Office. Civil marriage ceremonies take place at City Chambers, 253 High Street on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

Can You Photograph Just Our City Chambers Ceremony?

Absolutely. Our one-hour City Chambers photography package is designed for couples who don’t need all-day wedding photography. It gives us time to photograph your ceremony, congratulations, family groups and some beautiful newlywed portraits around Edinburgh’s Old Town.
It’s particularly popular for elopements, micro weddings and intimate City Chambers ceremonies.

Is One Hour Enough for Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding Photography?

Yes — for many City Chambers weddings, one hour is plenty. We can photograph your ceremony, congratulations afterwards, family groups and a relaxed newlywed portrait session around the Royal Mile, St Giles’ Cathedral and nearby Old Town closes.
If you’d like to explore farther afield — perhaps Victoria Street, the Grassmarket and The Vennel — we’d recommend two hours of photography. It gives us more time and variety without turning your wedding into a lengthy photoshoot.

We’re Travelling to Edinburgh to Get Married — Can You Help Us Plan Our Photography?

Definitely. Many of the couples we photograph at Edinburgh City Chambers travel to Scotland for their wedding, so we’re used to helping couples who don’t know the city.
We’ll help you work out how much photography time you’ll need, suggest a realistic route around the Old Town and advise on timings, weather alternatives and what works particularly well at different times of year. You don’t need to arrive in Edinburgh already knowing where you want every photograph taken — that’s where our local experience comes in.

We’re Awkward in Front of the Camera — Will You Pose Us?

Don’t worry — most of our couples tell us exactly the same thing!
We won’t spend your City Chambers wedding forcing you into stiff poses. During your newlywed photographs, we’ll give you enough gentle direction so you never feel lost or wonder what you’re supposed to be doing, then let the two of you relax and be yourselves.
The result is the best of both worlds: natural photographs that still make you look fantastic.

How Long Does It Take to Receive Our City Chambers Wedding Photos?

You can usually expect your City Chambers wedding photographs to be ready within around one week. During our busiest summer months, it can occasionally take a little longer, but we’ll always keep you updated. If you’re happy for us to do so, we’ll also share a few sneak peeks within a few days of your wedding.

Is there parking for Edinburgh City Chambers Weddings?

City Chambers has very limited vehicle access and parking arrangements can change, particularly during events and the Edinburgh Festivals. We recommend confirming current access arrangements directly with City Chambers before your wedding and allowing guests plenty of time to reach the Royal Mile.

What time should my guests arrive?

We recommend asking guests to arrive at least 10 minutes before your ceremony, and a little earlier if you’d like photographs with them beforehand.

Do We Need Witnesses for an Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding?

Yes. You’ll need two witnesses aged 16 or over who understand what’s happening during the ceremony. City Chambers doesn’t provide witnesses, so you’ll need to arrange these yourselves.
If you’re eloping to Edinburgh without guests, we can help. When both of us are photographing your wedding, Jonathon and Claire are happy to act as your two witnesses at no extra charge. If your photography package includes only one of us, contact us beforehand, and we can discuss options for arranging a second witness.

How Much Does It Cost to Get Married at Edinburgh City Chambers?

Ceremony prices vary depending on the room, day and type of ceremony you choose. As City Chambers can change its fees, we recommend checking current ceremony prices directly with the wedding team before booking.
