Balbirnie House Hotel, near Markinch, is one of the best-known country house wedding venues in Fife. The Category A-listed Georgian mansion sits within 400 acres of Balbirnie Park, giving couples a substantial historic house, landscaped grounds and several very different spaces for the wedding day.
We’ve photographed 22 weddings at Balbirnie House, so we know how much variety there is without leaving the venue. Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and one thing that stands out is the venue’s scale. The glass-roofed Atrium and sweeping staircase give you a very different look from the more traditional country house venues elsewhere in Fife, while the hotel also has several larger reception and event spaces for bigger celebrations.

Rufflets St Andrews
Set within 10 acres of gardens just outside the centre of St Andrews, Rufflets St Andrews is a characterful option for couples looking for a garden wedding venue in Fife with accommodation and plenty of outdoor space on site.
Claire and I have photographed weddings at Rufflets ourselves, and the gardens are one of the venue’s strongest features from a photography perspective. They give you plenty of variety for couple portraits and family photographs without needing to leave the grounds, while the hotel’s more traditional interiors provide a useful contrast if the weather changes.
For larger celebrations, the self-contained Garden Suite has its own private terrace and can accommodate up to 150 guests. Smaller weddings can also use the Drawing Room in the main house, which suits much more intimate celebrations.
Rufflets also operates a one-wedding-per-day policy, which makes it particularly appealing if you want a relaxed St Andrews wedding venue where you and your guests remain the focus throughout the day.

Kinkell Byre
Just outside St Andrews, Kinkell Byre is one of the best-known barn wedding venues in Fife. The converted farm buildings sit close to the coast, with exposed stone, timber beams and a large open-plan interior that couples can style very differently from one wedding to the next.
Claire and I have photographed weddings at Kinkell Byre ourselves, and one of its biggest strengths is how much space you have to work with. The main byre can accommodate the ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening celebrations, while the surrounding countryside and coastal setting give you plenty of variety for photographs outside.
Its position near St Andrews also means you have the option of using nearby coastal locations if your timings allow, although there’s more than enough around the venue itself for most wedding days.

Falkland Estate
At the foot of the Lomond Hills, Falkland Estate is one of the more unusual outdoor and rustic wedding venues in Fife, with woodland, historic buildings and open countryside all forming part of the setting.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and what makes Falkland particularly interesting is its range of spaces across the estate. Ceremonies can take place at the roofless Memorial Chapel, beneath the trees, or in covered outdoor areas such as the Woodland Canopy, while the restored Stables Courtyard and Carriage Room provide additional options for the celebrations.

Near Kinghorn and Kirkcaldy, Kilrie Granary is a smaller, characterful option for couples looking for a rustic wedding venue in Fife with plenty of flexibility.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here, and the venue feels very different from Fife’s larger hotels and country houses. The Granary Hall and light-filled Long Gallery provide two contrasting indoor spaces, while the surrounding gardens and historic mill area give you useful outdoor options for both ceremonies and photographs.
One of the most distinctive ceremony settings is beside the old 17th-century mill wheel, which adds something genuinely different to the venue’s rural setting.

St Salvator’s Chapel
In the heart of the University of St Andrews, St Salvator’s Chapel is one of the most distinctive historic wedding venues in Fife. Its collegiate layout, stained glass, dark timber and position within St Salvator’s Quadrangle give ceremonies here a very different atmosphere from a hotel or country house wedding.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the chapel works particularly well for couples with a connection to St Andrews. The University currently limits weddings to those who meet its eligibility criteria, including graduates, current staff, graduate-level students and some people with qualifying local or family connections.
The chapel is also larger than many visitors expect, seating around 180 guests in the nave with additional capacity in the ante-chapel.
From a St Andrews wedding photography perspective, one of the biggest advantages is what surrounds you once the ceremony ends. The quadrangle, historic university buildings, North Street and the wider centre of St Andrews are all immediately accessible for photographs.

University of St Andrews, Upper & Lower College Halls
For couples planning a University of St Andrews wedding, the Upper and Lower College Halls offer two historic reception spaces right in the heart of the town.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the two halls work particularly well together. Lower College Hall is commonly used for the wedding breakfast and can also host civil ceremonies, while Upper College Hall has a large dance floor, oak bar and space for the evening reception or ceilidh.
Their location within St Salvator’s Quadrangle is one of the biggest advantages for photography. You already have the historic university buildings and quad immediately outside, while St Andrews Cathedral, the old streets and the coast are all within walking distance if your timings allow.
For couples looking for a historic wedding venue in St Andrews with a strong connection to the University, the College Halls are one of the most distinctive options in Fife.
Inchcolm Abbey
Set on Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth, Inchcolm Abbey is one of the most unusual historic wedding venues in Fife. Reaching it by boat immediately makes the day feel different, and the combination of medieval ruins, sea views and the island setting gives weddings here a character you simply don’t get from a hotel or country house.
Claire and I have photographed weddings at Inchcolm Abbey ourselves, and the journey across the Forth becomes part of the experience as much as the ceremony itself. Historic Environment Scotland currently allows weddings in spaces including the Chapter House for smaller ceremonies and the larger Refectory for bigger guest numbers.

Inside St Andrews Town Hall, the historic Burgh Chambers offer a more intimate alternative to the larger hotels and country houses elsewhere in Fife. You can book the room for small weddings and civil ceremonies, making it a useful option for couples planning a simple ceremony in the centre of St Andrews.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the central location is one of its biggest advantages. Once the ceremony is finished, you’re already within easy walking distance of the historic streets, University buildings, St Andrews Cathedral and several of the town’s best locations for wedding photographs.
The Burgh Chambers have also recently been refurbished, while the larger Main Hall in the Town Hall can be used for wedding receptions if you want to keep more of the day under one roof.
For couples looking for an intimate wedding venue in St Andrews, particularly for a civil ceremony followed by photographs around the town, it’s a very practical option.

Holy Trinity Church, St Andrews
On South Street in the centre of St Andrews, Holy Trinity Church — often known locally as the Town Kirk — is one of the most prominent church wedding venues in St Andrews.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and its central location makes it particularly practical. After the ceremony, you’re already within walking distance of the historic streets, University buildings, St Andrews Cathedral and other locations we regularly use for wedding photographs around the town.
The church offers a more traditional setting than the hotels and converted barns elsewhere in Fife, with a spacious historic interior that works well for larger religious ceremonies.
It’s a strong option for couples looking for a traditional church wedding in St Andrews, especially if the reception is taking place elsewhere in the town at venues such as the Old Course Hotel or University halls.
St Margaret’s Memorial Church, Dunfermline
Close to the centre of Dunfermline, St Margaret’s Memorial Church is a distinctive option for couples planning a Catholic wedding in Fife. Its scale, stone architecture and traditional interior give ceremonies here a very different atmosphere from the hotels and country houses elsewhere in the region.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the church works particularly well for larger religious ceremonies. The parish currently asks couples arranging a marriage to make contact around six months in advance, so it’s worth speaking to the church early in your planning.

Keavil House Hotel
In Crossford, just outside Dunfermline, Keavil House Hotel is a traditional country house wedding venue in Fife with landscaped gardens and several different spaces for ceremonies and receptions.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and one practical strength of the hotel is how easily the main wedding spaces connect with the gardens. The Elgin Suite is the largest option and has direct access outside, while the Mountbatten Suite works well for slightly smaller celebrations and also opens onto the grounds.
That easy access is useful for wedding photography in Fife, particularly for family groups and couple portraits, because you can move between the reception and the gardens without taking everyone far away from the celebrations.
Keavil is a good option if you’re looking for a Dunfermline wedding venue with accommodation, substantial indoor space and plenty of greenery on site.
Garvock House Hotel
Set in an elevated position overlooking Dunfermline, Garvock House Hotel is a 200-year-old Georgian property with landscaped gardens and a more intimate feel than some of Fife’s larger wedding hotels.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and one of Garvock’s strengths is how easily the day flows between the house, terrace and gardens. Smaller ceremonies can use the hotel’s more intimate reception rooms, while the larger Rosemalen Suite can take the wedding through from ceremony to evening celebrations.
The gardens are particularly useful for family groups and couple portraits, while the terrace works well for the drinks reception when the weather cooperates.

Just north of Dunfermline, Balmule House is a historic country house set within around 30 acres of private grounds. Its smaller scale gives it a more secluded feel than many hotel-based wedding venues in Fife.
Claire and I have photographed weddings at Balmule ourselves, and the combination of the house, gardens and surrounding countryside gives you plenty of variety for photographs without needing to leave the property. The walled garden is particularly useful, while the interiors provide a very different backdrop if the weather keeps everyone indoors.

DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh – Queensferry Crossing
In North Queensferry, the DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh – Queensferry Crossing is one of the most distinctive Fife wedding venues near Edinburgh, mainly because of its position overlooking the Firth of Forth and the three bridges.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the bridge views are what really set it apart. The hotel’s Hope View Suite looks across the water, while the larger Caledonian Suite gives couples more space for bigger celebrations.

Wedding Venues Near Fife Worth Considering
If you’re looking around Fife rather than limiting your search strictly to the county boundary, there are also a couple of excellent venues just beyond Fife that we know from photographing weddings there.
Kinross House, on the shores of Loch Leven, is in Kinross-shire and offers an exceptional exclusive-use estate setting, while Tullibole Castle, near Crook of Devon, provides a much more intimate historic castle experience.
Neither is technically a Fife wedding venue, so we haven’t included them in our main Fife list above, but both are worth considering if you’re happy to look a little farther west.
Kinross House
Although Kinross House is not technically in Fife, it sits just beyond the county boundary near Kinross and is a realistic alternative for couples looking at luxury wedding venues around Fife and central Scotland.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and the estate’s scale and privacy really set it apart. The Palladian house sits within more than 100 acres of private grounds overlooking Loch Leven, with formal gardens, woodland and the Coach House all available as part of an exclusive-use stay.
The estate is designed around private hire rather than operating like a conventional hotel, which makes it particularly well suited to couples planning a multi-day celebration with family and friends staying on site.
From a photography perspective, the house, formal gardens and views across Loch Leven give you plenty of variety without needing to leave the estate.
Kinross House is in Kinross-shire rather than Fife, but it is close enough to be worth considering if your venue search extends a little beyond the Kingdom.
Tullibole Castle
Tullibole Castle, near Crook of Devon, is another venue just beyond Fife in the Kinross-shire countryside. It offers a much more intimate and informal castle setting than many of Scotland’s larger historic estates.
Claire and I have photographed weddings here ourselves, and one of Tullibole’s strengths is the variety of ceremony settings within the grounds. Couples can marry inside the Great Hall, beside the moat, on the Castle Lawn, in the woodland, in the rustic barn or beneath the distinctive Cathedral Tree.
The 17th-century castle is available exclusively for the wedding weekend, with the Carriage House and Terrace providing space for larger celebrations. The grounds also include a ruined medieval church, maze and moat, giving you several very different settings for photographs without travelling away from the venue.
If you’re looking for a castle wedding venue near Fife rather than strictly within the county boundary, Tullibole is well worth considering.

One practical advantage of many wedding venues in Fife is their accessibility from Edinburgh and the rest of central Scotland. The Queensferry Crossing provides the main road connection from Edinburgh, while venues around North Queensferry, Dunfermline and southern Fife are particularly convenient for guests travelling from the capital or Edinburgh Airport.
For St Andrews wedding venues, many guests travel by road or take the rail connection to Leuchars, followed by a short taxi or arranged transfer into St Andrews. Kirkcaldy, Inverkeithing and Dunfermline also have useful rail connections for weddings elsewhere in Fife.
Accommodation is worth considering early, particularly for weddings in St Andrews and the East Neuk, where hotels and guest accommodation can become busy during university events, major golf tournaments and the summer season.

Because Claire and I have photographed weddings at the venues featured in this guide, we’ve focused on places we know first-hand rather than trying to list every wedding venue in Fife.
What are the best barn wedding venues in Fife?
Two of the strongest barn wedding venues in Fife we’ve photographed are Kinkell Byre and Kilrie Granary.
Kinkell Byre, near St Andrews, is the larger and more flexible of the two, with a converted byre, substantial indoor space and a coastal setting. Kilrie Granary offers a smaller, more intimate rustic venue with historic stone buildings, gardens and the old mill area.
If you like the relaxed feel of a barn wedding but want something more outdoors-focused, Falkland Estate is another option worth considering. Its woodland, countryside and unusual ceremony spaces give it a rustic character without being a conventional barn venue.
When comparing rustic wedding venues in Fife, the main differences are scale, setting and how much freedom you want to personalise the day.
Which Fife wedding venues are best for a small wedding?
For a smaller or more intimate wedding in Fife, good options include St Andrews Burgh Chambers, Rufflets St Andrews, Kilrie Granary, Balmule House and Inchcolm Abbey.
St Andrews Burgh Chambers works particularly well for a simple civil ceremony followed by photographs around the town, while Rufflets offers smaller celebrations within a country house hotel setting. Kilrie Granary has a more relaxed rural feel, and Balmule House suits couples who would prefer the privacy of a country house and grounds.
For something completely different, Inchcolm Abbey can work beautifully for a small wedding where the boat journey, island and historic ruins become part of the experience.
When comparing small wedding venues in Fife, we’d look at more than maximum capacity. A venue that still feels atmospheric with a smaller guest list, has somewhere comfortable for everyone to spend the day and gives you good options for photographs will usually work much better than simply choosing a large venue and using less of it.
Which Fife wedding venues are closest to Edinburgh?
Some of the easiest Fife wedding venues to reach from Edinburgh are around North Queensferry and Dunfermline.
The DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh – Queensferry Crossing is particularly convenient because it sits just across the Forth in North Queensferry. Garvock House Hotel, Balmule House and Keavil House Hotel are also relatively close to Edinburgh and Edinburgh Airport while still giving you the feel of getting married outside the city.
Venues around St Andrews and the East Neuk, including Kinkell Byre, Fairmont St Andrews and the Old Course Hotel, involve a longer journey but are still very manageable for guests travelling from Edinburgh.
If easy access from the capital matters, we’d compare not only driving time but also guest accommodation, transport after the evening reception and how easy it is for everyone to travel between the ceremony and reception.

Several Fife wedding venues offer exclusive use, including Balmule House, Kinkell Byre and Kilrie Granary.
Balmule House offers exclusive use of the house and grounds, which works particularly well for smaller country house weddings and multi-day celebrations. Kinkell Byre provides exclusive use of the barn and surrounding spaces, giving couples plenty of freedom to personalise the venue, while Kilrie Granary offers exclusive use of its event spaces and gardens.
Exclusive use can make a wedding feel more private and relaxed because you’re not sharing the venue with other events or hotel guests. It can also make the photography easier to plan, as you have more freedom to use the grounds and different spaces throughout the day.
If exclusivity is important to you, it’s still worth checking exactly what each venue includes, as the definition can vary between venues and packages.
Which Fife wedding venues have accommodation on site?
Several Fife wedding venues have accommodation on site, including Balbirnie House Hotel, Old Course Hotel, Fairmont St Andrews, Rufflets St Andrews, Keavil House Hotel, Garvock House Hotel and the DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh – Queensferry Crossing.
For larger weddings, hotels such as the Old Course Hotel, Fairmont St Andrews and DoubleTree Queensferry Crossing make it easy to keep a substantial number of guests in one place. Balbirnie House and Rufflets offer a more traditional country house feel with bedrooms on site, while Keavil House and Garvock House are convenient options around Dunfermline.
Having accommodation at the venue can make the day much easier for guests, particularly if people are travelling a long distance or you’re planning a late evening reception. It also reduces the need for taxis or organised transport between the venue and nearby hotels.
If guest accommodation matters to you, ask each venue how many rooms are available for wedding guests and whether any bedrooms are included or reserved as part of your wedding package.
Can I get married at St Salvator’s Chapel if I’m not a student?
Yes, potentially. You do not have to be a current student to get married at St Salvator’s Chapel, but the University of St Andrews does require at least one person in the couple to have a qualifying connection.
That can include University alumni, current staff, certain family connections and some people who live locally within the KY16 postcode, as well as eligible current students.
Because the eligibility rules are specific and can change, we’d recommend checking the University of St Andrews official wedding chapel guidelines directly before making plans.
If you don’t qualify to marry in one of the University chapels, Holy Trinity Church and St Andrews Burgh Chambers are two other ceremony options in the centre of St Andrews.
Where are the best places for wedding photos in Fife?
Some of the best places for wedding photos in Fife are around St Andrews, Falkland, North Queensferry and the Fife coast, but we usually prefer locations that fit naturally into the wedding day rather than taking couples away from their guests for long periods.
Around St Andrews, West Sands, the historic University buildings, the harbour and the old streets can all work beautifully if your venue and timings make them practical. Falkland offers a very different look with historic streets, woodland and countryside, while North Queensferry gives you the chance to include the Forth Bridge and waterfront in your photographs.
Many of the best Fife wedding venues also have enough variety on site that you don’t need to travel anywhere at all. Balbirnie, Balmule, Rufflets, Fairmont St Andrews and Kinkell Byre, for example, each offer very different combinations of gardens, architecture, countryside or coastal scenery.
For us, the best wedding-photo location usually offers variety without taking you away from the celebration for longer than necessary.
What are the best wedding venues in St Andrews?
Some of the best wedding venues in St Andrews include the Old Course Hotel, Fairmont St Andrews, Rufflets St Andrews, Kinkell Byre, St Salvator’s Chapel and the University of St Andrews College Halls.
For a luxury hotel wedding, the Old Course Hotel gives you the golf course, West Sands and historic St Andrews close by, while Fairmont St Andrews offers a larger coastal resort setting overlooking St Andrews Bay. Rufflets offers a quieter country house feel with extensive gardens.
If you prefer something less formal, Kinkell Byre combines a converted barn with a coastal location just outside the town. Couples with a University connection can also consider St Salvator’s Chapel and the Upper and Lower College Halls for a wedding surrounded by some of St Andrews’ most historic architecture.
For smaller ceremonies, St Andrews Burgh Chambers is another practical option right in the centre of town.
The best choice really depends on whether you want a luxury hotel, coastal barn, historic University setting or a smaller town-centre ceremony.
What is the best time of year to get married in Fife?
There isn’t one best season for a wedding in Fife — the right time depends much more on the venue, the atmosphere you want and how important outdoor photographs are to you.
Spring and early autumn are particularly good for many Fife wedding venues because gardens and countryside still have plenty of colour, while the days are generally long enough to give you flexibility for photographs. Summer gives you the longest evenings and works especially well for coastal venues around St Andrews, although popular areas can also be considerably busier.
Autumn and winter weddings can suit country houses, historic buildings and venues with strong interiors particularly well. Shorter daylight simply means we plan the photography around the available light rather than relying on photographs later in the afternoon.
If you’re considering a St Andrews wedding venue, it’s also worth checking the University calendar and major golf events before choosing your date. Graduation periods and large sporting events can make the town much busier and put additional pressure on accommodation.
Whatever the season, we’d choose a venue you genuinely love indoors as well as outside. Scottish weather is never guaranteed, and the strongest wedding venues give you good photographic options in either case.
Which Fife wedding venues have outdoor ceremony spaces?
Several Fife wedding venues offer outdoor ceremony options, including Balbirnie House Hotel, Rufflets St Andrews, Falkland Estate and Kilrie Granary.
Balbirnie House can host garden ceremonies on its lawns, while Rufflets offers several ceremony locations within its extensive gardens. Falkland Estate offers even more flexibility, with options including the roofless Memorial Chapel, woodland settings and a covered Woodland Canopy.
At Kilrie Granary, ceremonies can take place in the grounds beside the historic 17th-century mill wheel, giving the setting a very different feel from a hotel garden.
