Balbirnie House wedding photos from Lisa and Kevin’s celebration show the day from morning preparations through to a packed dance floor later in the evening.

Their wedding was one of 22 weddings we’ve photographed at Balbirnie House, giving us plenty of first-hand experience of how the venue works throughout the day.

Their day included morning preparations at Balbirnie, a ceremony in the Orangery, confetti outside the house, portraits around the gardens and staircase, speeches in the Ballroom and a lively evening celebration.

It was a great example of why Balbirnie works so well for wedding photography. The Georgian house, bright ceremony spaces, gardens and Ballroom all create very different-looking photographs without taking the couple away from their guests for long.

    Jonathon and Claire, we simply cannot put into words what an amazing job you guys did at capturing all the special moments on our big day! We got married at Balbirnie House and the photos/video are absolutely incredible. We are forever thankful we chose you guys to be a part of our wedding
    Not only did yous do such a fantastic job on the day, but to take time out your busy schedule to come and photograph my Dad who sadly could not attend the wedding at the last minute and merge him into the photos meant the absolute world to us and every single person that has seen them cannot believe how much it looks like he actually was there!
    We truly cannot recommend you guys enough and wish we could do it all again. You both made this part of the day so special and memorable and for that, we cannot thank you guys enough ❤️

Morning Preparations at Balbirnie House

Lisa got ready at Balbirnie House with her bridesmaids, which meant we could start photographing the day naturally without anyone needing to travel elsewhere before the ceremony.

The morning included all the small details that help tell the story properly — Lisa’s dress, shoes, flowers and jewellery, alongside hair and make-up, the bridesmaids getting ready and the quieter moments as everyone prepared for the ceremony.

There was plenty happening without us needing to manufacture anything. The bridesmaids were relaxed and having a laugh together, while Lisa’s final preparations gave us a mixture of candid photographs and a few simple portraits once she was dressed.

Getting ready at Balbirnie also made the transition into the ceremony feel natural. Once everyone was ready, it was only a short move through the house before the next part of the day began.

Kevin’s Preparations and Scottish Details

Kevin got ready at Balbirnie with his groomsmen, giving us a second part of the morning to photograph while Lisa prepared elsewhere in the house.

The kilts, jackets and sporrans added plenty of Scottish character to the photographs, but the strongest moments were the natural interactions between Kevin, his family and the rest of the wedding party as everyone got ready.

One detail that stood out was the small black “Security” box used for the wedding rings—a simple, personal touch that fitted the morning’s relaxed mood and made for a memorable photograph.

Photographing both sides of the preparations helped us build a fuller picture of the day before everyone came together for the ceremony.

Lisa and Kevin’s Ceremony in the Orangery

Lisa and Kevin held their ceremony in The Orangery at Balbirnie House, a bright space with large windows and plenty of natural light.

The room had been decorated with blue and white flowers, with tall arrangements lining the aisle and a floral arch at the front. Guests gathered while a piper played outside, adding a distinctly Scottish start to the ceremony.

Kevin waited at the front while the wedding party made their way down the aisle, followed by Lisa and her mum. Because the Orangery is light and relatively open, we could photograph the processional, the ceremony itself, and guests’ reactions without moving around excessively.

The ceremony included plenty of small moments — smiles between Lisa and Kevin, reactions from family, the exchange of rings and their first kiss — before they walked back up the aisle together as newlyweds.

It’s exactly the kind of ceremony we enjoy photographing: lots happening naturally, good light, and plenty of opportunities to tell the story without interrupting it.

Confetti and Couple Portraits Around Balbirnie House

After the ceremony, Lisa and Kevin came outside to a big confetti welcome from their guests on the red carpet in front of Balbirnie House.

Once the family and group photographs were finished, we spent a short amount of time with the two of them around the house and gardens. One of Balbirnie’s biggest advantages is how much variety you can get without going far. We used the front of the house, lawns, quieter parts of the grounds and the staircase to create a mix of relaxed portraits.

We kept things simple and gave Lisa and Kevin enough direction to help when needed, without turning the portraits into a long photoshoot. That meant they could get back to their guests quickly while still having a varied set of photographs from around the venue.

The staircase also gave us a useful indoor option later on, adding another look to the gallery without relying entirely on the weather.

Speeches, First Dance and Evening Celebrations in the Ballroom

Lisa and Kevin’s wedding breakfast and evening celebrations took place in the Ballroom at Balbirnie House, with round tables, floral arrangements and strings of lights across the ceiling.

The speeches gave us some of the strongest candid photographs of the day. Rather than focusing only on whoever was speaking, we also photographed Lisa and Kevin, their families, and guests reacting around the room — the laughter, applause, and smaller moments happening between people.

Later, Lisa and Kevin cut their wedding cake before moving onto the dance floor for their first dance. The Ballroom looks very different once the daylight fades, with the darker dance floor and overhead lights creating a completely different atmosphere from earlier in the day.

Once the evening dancing started, the focus shifted to documenting the party as it happened. The dance floor quickly filled with family and friends, giving us plenty of energetic, unposed photos to finish the wedding story.
