Why Balbirnie House Works So Well for Weddings
After photographing 22 weddings at Balbirnie House, one thing we particularly like about the venue is the variety it offers without taking you away from your guests for long.
Preparations, ceremonies, drinks receptions, the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations can all take place around the house, while the gardens and parkland give us plenty of options for photographs just outside.
From a photographer’s point of view, that flexibility is really useful. The Georgian interiors, staircase, Orangery and Ballroom all have very different characters, while outside we can use the lawns, mature trees, pathways and the house itself as backgrounds for relaxed couple portraits and group photographs.
It also means we can adapt the photography to the day’s conditions. If the weather is good, we can make the most of the gardens and grounds. If it changes, Balbirnie has enough character indoors that we don’t have to force an outdoor plan simply because that was what we originally had in mind.
Because we already know the venue well, we can choose locations quickly and work around the natural flow of your wedding rather than spending your day scouting for photographs.
Wedding Rooms at Balbirnie House
Balbirnie has several different spaces for ceremonies, drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations, each with its own character and light.
Having photographed 22 weddings at Balbirnie House, we’ve worked across these rooms in very different conditions and at different points in the day.
From a photography point of view, the biggest difference between them is how they feel and how the light behaves. The Long Gallery, Orangery, Ballroom and staircase all give us very different options, which helps us create variety without needing to move you far from the main flow of the wedding.
Getting Ready at Balbirnie House
We’ve photographed wedding preparations at Balbirnie House many times, so we can start telling the day’s story without you needing to travel elsewhere before the ceremony.
The bedrooms give us opportunities to photograph the quieter parts of the morning — details, hair and make-up, family arriving, bridesmaids getting ready and the reactions once everyone is dressed.
Natural window light is particularly useful during preparations, but we work with whatever conditions we find on the day rather than trying to stage the morning around photographs. Our aim is to document what is happening while keeping preparations relaxed and allowing everyone to enjoy that part of the wedding.
The Long Gallery
The Long Gallery is one of Balbirnie’s distinctive ceremony spaces, with its arched ceiling, period features and large windows giving it a very different feel from the Ballroom.
From a photography point of view, the natural light is one of its biggest advantages during daytime ceremonies. The room’s shape also gives us useful viewpoints for photographing the processional, the ceremony itself, and reactions from family and friends without constantly moving around.
Its Georgian character comes through naturally in wider photographs, while the lighter interior works well for more intimate moments during the ceremony.
At Christmas, the room takes on a noticeably different atmosphere when Balbirnie’s seasonal decorations are in place, giving winter weddings an entirely different look.
The Orangery
The Orangery has a lighter, more contemporary feel than the original Georgian rooms at Balbirnie, with large windows and a distinctive glazed ceiling bringing plenty of daylight into the space.
We’ve photographed the Orangery as part of Balbirnie wedding days, and its light makes it particularly useful for natural photographs of guests spending time together between the more formal parts of the day.
Because it connects the historic house with a brighter, more open interior, it also adds another visual look to the photographs without asking you or your guests to go anywhere else.
The amount and direction of natural light will always vary with the weather and time of year, but a bright indoor space like this gives us another useful option when outside conditions are less predictable.
The Gardens
The gardens and parkland at Balbirnie House offer plenty of options for couple portraits, family groups, and relaxed photographs of guests during the drinks reception.
We’ve photographed the grounds in different seasons and weather conditions, and one of their biggest advantages is the variety available close to the house. The lawns, mature trees, pathways, and Georgian exterior give us different backgrounds without taking you away from your guests for long.
For larger family or wedding-party photographs, the open lawns give us useful space to work efficiently. For couple portraits, we can move into quieter parts of the grounds for more privacy and choose locations based on the light at that time of day.
When the weather is less cooperative, we don’t need to rely on the gardens. Balbirnie has enough strong indoor locations that we can adapt the plan and head outside later if conditions improve.
The Staircase
The staircase at Balbirnie House is one of the most useful indoor locations for portraits, particularly when the weather makes spending time outside less appealing.
Its scale and architecture give photographs a noticeably different look from the gardens, while the staircase’s shape lets us create both wider portraits that show the surroundings and closer photos of you two.
Having photographed here many times, we know how to use the space efficiently without turning it into a lengthy portrait session. It can also be useful later in the day when the light outside has faded or when we want to add a little more variety to your photographs.
The Ballroom
The Ballroom at Balbirnie House is the main space for larger celebrations, and we’ve photographed ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, speeches, first dances and evening receptions here.
From a photography perspective, its size gives us plenty of room to work discreetly during the key parts of the day. During speeches, for example, we can photograph both the person speaking and the reactions around the room without constantly moving through guests.
Later in the evening, the Ballroom takes on a very different character. The dark dance floor and lighting create a strong backdrop for the first dance and the atmosphere once everyone joins the dance floor.
Because we already know the room and how it changes from daylight to evening, we can adapt where we work as conditions change, rather than treating each part of the day the same way.
