Wedding Preparations at Rusacks St Andrews

Julie and Ross began their wedding day at Rusacks St Andrews, overlooking the Old Course and West Sands.

We photographed their preparations separately before they met for a first look inside the hotel. The rooms offered a good mix of natural window light, darker interiors, and views across the golf course, which worked well for both the quieter preparation photographs and the portraits before they left for the ceremony.

Julie wore a knee-length lace wedding dress with long sleeves and carried a dried-flower bouquet, while Ross wore a checked three-piece suit. Their outfits suited the relaxed nature of the day and were practical for moving around St Andrews afterwards.

Their First Look at Rusacks

Before leaving for the Burgh Chambers, Julie and Ross chose to see each other privately at the hotel.

We kept this simple and let the moment happen naturally, photographing Ross’s reaction and the few quiet minutes they had together before heading into town.

They also opened a bottle of fizz before leaving, which gave them a chance to relax and enjoy the start of the day rather than rushing straight from preparations into the ceremony.

From there, we travelled the short distance to St Andrews Burgh Chambers for their civil wedding ceremony.

Wedding Ceremony at St Andrews Burgh Chambers

Julie and Ross held their civil wedding ceremony in the Burgh Chambers at St Andrews Town Hall.

The Burgh Chambers are designed for smaller weddings and civil ceremonies, making the room particularly well suited to an intimate celebration or elopement. Despite being right in the centre of St Andrews, the historic wood panelling, stained glass and high ceiling give the ceremony room plenty of character.

From a photography perspective, the smaller scale works well. We can photograph the ceremony quietly from different positions without moving around excessively, while the windows provide useful natural light alongside the room’s warmer tones.

Julie and Ross’s Civil Ceremony

Julie and Ross exchanged personal vows during a relaxed ceremony with just a small number of people present.

With such an intimate wedding, we could focus on their reactions, the exchange of rings, and the little moments between them rather than working around a large congregation.

After signing the marriage paperwork, they were already in the centre of St Andrews, which meant we could head straight out for photographs around the town and coast without building a long journey into the day.

Wedding Photos Around St Andrews After the Ceremony

One of the biggest advantages of getting married at St Andrews Burgh Chambers is its location. Once the ceremony is finished, you’re already close to many of the places we use for wedding photographs around St Andrews.

For Julie and Ross, we used the time after their ceremony for a relaxed trip around town and the coast, rather than treating it as a formal portrait session.

Wedding Photos at West Sands

We headed to West Sands for beach photos, giving Julie and Ross a completely different setting from the historic interiors of the Burgh Chambers.

The wide beach, dunes, and open coastline work particularly well for relaxed photographs where couples can simply walk, talk, and enjoy time together after the ceremony.

It can be windy — as you would expect on the Fife coast — but we usually work with the conditions rather than trying to make everything look perfectly still. On Julie and Ross’s day, the breeze added movement to the photographs and suited the informal feel of their elopement.

Wedding Photos at the Old Course and Swilcan Bridge

We also photographed Julie and Ross around the Old Course, including the famous Swilcan Bridge.

It’s one of the most recognisable locations in St Andrews and can be a great addition to a wedding gallery, particularly for couples who have a connection to the town or golf.

The Old Course is a working golf course, so access and timings need to be treated sensibly. We never assume we’ll have a location entirely to ourselves, so we keep this part of the photography quick and relaxed rather than holding up play or turning it into a lengthy staged shoot.

The combination of the Burgh Chambers, historic town, Old Course and West Sands means you can create a varied set of wedding photographs around St Andrews without spending hours travelling between locations.

What We’ve Learned From Photographing a St Andrews Elopement

Photographing Julie and Ross’s wedding showed how well St Andrews can work for a small, relaxed celebration.

You Can Fit a Lot Into a Shorter Wedding Day

Because there were fewer people and no large reception schedule to work around, Julie and Ross could move comfortably from preparations at Rusacks to the Burgh Chambers, then on to West Sands and the Old Course.

That gave them a varied set of photographs without the day feeling rushed or over-planned.

The Location Does Most of the Work

One of the biggest advantages of a St Andrews elopement is how many different settings are close together.

Historic interiors, old streets, the University, golf course and beach are all within a relatively small area, so you don’t need a complicated route or long journeys between locations.

You Still Need a Flexible Plan

A smaller wedding doesn’t mean everything has to be tightly scheduled.

Weather, traffic, access to the Old Course and how busy St Andrews is on the day can all affect where we photograph and in what order.

We normally plan a few strong options in advance, then decide what works best once we see the conditions on the day.

Less Time Posing, More Time Enjoying St Andrews

With an elopement or small wedding, there’s no reason to turn the afternoon into a long photoshoot.

We prefer to keep things moving naturally, using short photography sessions in different locations while giving couples plenty of time to enjoy being newly married.

Planning a St Andrews Registry Office Wedding

A small wedding at St Andrews Burgh Chambers is relatively straightforward to organise, but there are a few practical things worth sorting early.

Marriage Notice and Legal Paperwork

If you’re having a legal civil marriage in St Andrews, both of you must submit a Marriage Notice (M10) form and the required supporting documents to Fife Council.

The statutory minimum notice period is 29 days before the wedding, although Fife Council recommends submitting your paperwork around 10–12 weeks beforehand to give the registrar enough time to process everything.

You cannot currently submit marriage notices more than three months before the ceremony.

You’ll also need to provide details of two witnesses aged 16 or over, who must be present at the ceremony.

Getting Around St Andrews on Your Wedding Day

One advantage of the Burgh Chambers is how easy it is to combine the ceremony with photographs elsewhere in St Andrews.

The historic town centre is immediately outside, while the Old Course, harbour, cathedral ruins and West Sands are all relatively close. We normally choose just a few locations rather than trying to visit everything.

If you’re planning photos around the town or on the beach, bring comfortable footwear. Historic streets, grass, sand and coastal paths aren’t always particularly friendly to wedding shoes.

Allow Some Flexibility for the Weather

St Andrews is exposed to the coast, so wind and changing weather are fairly normal.

Rather than planning the photography around one exact route, we prefer to have several options and decide what works best on the day. If the beach is particularly windy, for example, we can spend more time around the historic streets or other sheltered locations.

That flexibility is one reason a small St Andrews wedding can work so well: there’s plenty of variety nearby without needing a rigid photography schedule.
