We’ve photographed 14 weddings at Carberry Tower, giving us extensive first-hand experience of this historic East Lothian venue and how it works across a full wedding day.

Set around seven miles from Edinburgh within a large private estate, Carberry Tower combines historic interiors with extensive gardens and grounds. That gives couples plenty of variety for photographs without needing to travel away from the venue.

From the ceremony spaces and wood-panelled rooms to the lawns, gardens and mature trees outside, there are useful options throughout the day and in different weather conditions.

Why Carberry Tower Works Well for Wedding Photography

After photographing 14 weddings at Carberry Tower, one thing we value most is the variety it offers without couples needing to leave the estate.

The grounds give us plenty of outdoor options, including lawns, mature trees, the rose garden and quieter pathways around the estate. That variety is useful because we can choose locations based on the light, weather, and how much time a couple wants to spend away from their guests.

Inside the Mansion House, the wood-panelled rooms, fireplaces, staircase and lounges give photographs a completely different feel. They also provide useful alternatives when the weather makes spending long periods outside less appealing.

For us, that mix of interiors, gardens, and purpose-built wedding spaces is what makes Carberry Tower particularly flexible for photographing a full wedding day.

Wedding Spaces at Carberry Tower

The Chapel

The Chapel is one of Carberry Tower’s main ceremony spaces and gives photographs a more traditional feel than the outdoor areas. Its interior also provides a dependable ceremony option when the weather is unsettled.

The Rose Garden and Champagne Terrace

For outdoor parts of the day, the Rose Garden and Champagne Terrace give couples and guests space to relax while keeping everything close to the Mansion House. We’ve found these areas particularly useful for candid photographs, confetti and informal group photos.

The Drawing Room and Library Lounge

These rooms provide useful indoor alternatives for drinks, portraits and quieter moments during the day. The darker wood, fireplaces and period details give photographs a very different look from the gardens outside.

The Banqueting Pavilion

The Banqueting Pavilion is used for larger wedding breakfasts and speeches. Its scale means it feels quite different from the more intimate rooms inside the main house and gives us plenty of space to photograph reactions naturally.

The Parterre Suite

The Parterre Suite (formerly known as the Rose Garden Rooms) is used for evening celebrations and dancing, rounding out the day without guests leaving the estate.

Because room use and wedding arrangements can change, couples should confirm their current plans directly with Carberry Tower.

Wedding Portraits Around Carberry Tower

One of Carberry Tower’s biggest strengths for portraits is the amount of variety available without taking couples far from their guests.

The lawns, rose garden, mature trees, and quieter paths around the estate give us different options depending on the light, weather, and time available. We can usually create a varied set of portraits in a relatively short time, rather than turning the photography into a long walk around the grounds.

The Mansion House also offers strong indoor alternatives, particularly around the staircase, wood-panelled rooms, and fireplaces, so poor weather doesn’t mean relying on one or two backup locations.

After photographing 14 weddings here, we’ve learned that the best approach is usually to use the areas that suit the day’s conditions rather than follow a fixed route around the estate.
