Dundas is an exclusive-use Scottish castle wedding venue near Edinburgh, combining the 600-year-old Auld Keep with the main castle, gardens, courtyard and Pavilion, all within a 500-acre estate.

Having photographed weddings here through different seasons and weather conditions, we know how to make the most of the Great Hall, staircase, castle interiors and extensive grounds without taking you away from your guests for long.

Our approach is relaxed and unobtrusive, combining genuine documentary moments with natural portraits that use Dundas Castle’s character while keeping photography part of the day, not the focus.

Why Dundas Castle Works So Well for Weddings

Dundas gives couples something quite unusual: a historic Scottish castle, extensive private grounds and several very different wedding spaces all within one exclusive-use estate.

The 600-year-old Auld Keep provides the most historic setting, while the main castle offers lighter, more elegant interiors and the Pavilion gives larger weddings a completely different space for dinner and dancing.

From a photography point of view, that variety is particularly useful. We can move between the Great Hall, staircase, Drawing Room, Library, courtyard, and gardens without leaving the estate, giving the photographs a noticeably different feel as the day progresses.

The 500-acre estate also means there is plenty of space outdoors when the weather cooperates, while the castle interiors give us strong alternatives when it doesn’t.

Wedding Ceremony and Reception Spaces at Dundas Castle

One of Dundas Castle’s strengths is the choice of spaces available for different sizes and styles of wedding, from intimate ceremonies inside the Auld Keep to larger celebrations in the Pavilion.

The Great Hall in the Auld Keep

The Great Hall sits inside the 600-year-old Auld Keep and is one of Dundas Castle’s most distinctive ceremony spaces.

Its vaulted ceiling, original stonework and historic atmosphere give photographs here a very different feel from the lighter rooms in the main castle.

The venue currently lists the Great Hall for ceremonies of up to 110 guests.

The Croquet Room is a lighter, more elegant option in the main castle, with tall windows overlooking the lawns, a large fireplace and chandelier.

Dundas currently lists it for ceremonies of up to 80 guests and wedding breakfasts for up to 60.

From a photography point of view, the large windows make it particularly useful when you want a brighter indoor setting.

The Main Hall

The Main Hall is another option for smaller ceremonies and is one of the castle spaces we particularly like photographically because of the stained-glass window, wood panelling and grand staircase.

The venue currently lists it for ceremonies of around 60 guests.

Outdoor and Courtyard Ceremonies

When the weather cooperates, Dundas can also host ceremonies outdoors in the grounds or within the castle courtyard.

The castle currently lists the Courtyard for ceremonies of up to 180 guests.

The Pavilion

For larger wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations, the Pavilion provides a much more contemporary space than the historic castle interiors.

Dundas’s current wedding quick facts list the Pavilion for wedding breakfasts of up to 180 guests, and the venue team can advise on the most suitable setup for your guest numbers and evening plans.

Its contrast with the Auld Keep and main castle is useful photographically because the day can move from historic ceremony spaces into a completely different setting for dinner and dancing.

Best Wedding Photo Locations at Dundas Castle

After photographing 20 weddings at Dundas Castle, we’ve learned that one of the venue’s biggest strengths is the amount of photographic variety available without needing to leave the estate.

The Auld Keep

The Auld Keep gives us some of the most distinctive portraits at Dundas, especially when we want photos that clearly show the venue’s historic character.

Its stonework, narrow staircases and Great Hall create a very different look from the lighter rooms in the main castle.

The main castle staircase is one of our favourite indoor locations.

The stained glass, wood panelling, and natural light make it a strong option for newlywed portraits and family photographs, especially when the weather makes outdoor photography less appealing.

The Castle Exterior and Courtyard

The front of the castle and surrounding courtyard work particularly well for wider portraits that show Dundas’s scale and architecture.

They’re also useful because we can create a few photographs here without taking you far from your guests.

The Gardens and Grounds

The lawns, mature trees, and wider estate give us plenty of outdoor options year-round.

Rather than following the same route at every wedding, we choose locations based on the season, weather, and available light on the day.

When access is available and conditions are suitable, the Auld Keep rooftop offers a completely different perspective across the estate and surrounding landscape.

If rooftop photographs are particularly important to you, it’s worth discussing access with the Dundas team before the wedding rather than assuming it will automatically be possible on the day.

What We’ve Learned From Photographing 20 Weddings at Dundas Castle

After photographing 20 weddings at Dundas Castle, we’ve learned a few practical tips that can make the day feel easier and more relaxed.

The Castle Gives You Plenty of Variety Without Travelling

The Auld Keep, main staircase, Croquet Room, courtyard and grounds all give us very different looks within the same estate.

That means we can create a varied set of portraits without turning the photography into a long trip away from your guests.

The Auld Keep Feels Completely Different From the Main Castle

The historic stonework and tighter spaces of the Auld Keep create a much more atmospheric look than the brighter rooms in the main castle.

We use that contrast deliberately rather than photographing every part of the venue in the same way.

The Grounds Work Best When We Follow the Light

The gardens and wider estate can look completely different depending on the season, weather and time of day.

Rather than deciding in advance on one specific location, we choose the spots that work best at the time.

Indoor Options Matter More Than You Think

Even on a summer wedding day, Scottish weather can change quickly.

The staircase, Drawing Room, Library and other interiors give us strong alternatives, so we don’t need to force outdoor portraits when conditions aren’t helping.

Let the Congratulations Happen Before Portraits

After the ceremony, couples are often immediately surrounded by family and friends who want to hug them, congratulate them, and chat.

We’d rather let those moments happen naturally before organising family photographs or newlywed portraits, rather than pulling you away as soon as the ceremony ends.

Accommodation and Wedding-Day Flow at Dundas Castle

One of Dundas Castle’s practical strengths is that so much of the wedding can happen within the same private estate.

The castle currently has 17 bedrooms accommodating up to 37 adults, with additional beds available for children. Those rooms are spread across the Main House, Courtyard Cottage and Stables.

Morning Preparations

Having accommodation on site makes the morning much easier to photograph because both preparations and the ceremony can happen without anyone needing to travel between venues.

The bedrooms also give us a variety of interiors for candid preparation photographs before the wedding begins.

Staying Overnight

For couples who want to keep close family and friends together, the 17 bedrooms let a substantial part of the wedding party stay on site.

Dundas is an exclusive-use venue, so the castle is booked as a whole rather than operating like a hotel with unrelated guests coming and going.

The Boathouse

The Boathouse sits separately on the loch within the Dundas estate and can also be booked independently for two people.

It’s a much quieter, more private option for couples who want somewhere separate to stay after the wedding.

Keeping the Day in One Place

From a photography point of view, having preparations, the ceremony, the reception, and evening celebrations all within the same estate helps the day flow naturally.

We spend less time moving between locations and more time photographing what is actually happening.

Where are the best places for wedding photos at Dundas Castle?

Some of our favourites are the Auld Keep, main staircase, castle exterior, courtyard and gardens.

When access and conditions allow, the Auld Keep rooftop can also give a completely different view across the estate.

What happens if it rains on our Dundas Castle wedding day?

Rain isn’t a major problem because Dundas gives us several strong indoor options.

The Auld Keep, staircase, Drawing Room, Library, and other castle interiors let us keep photographing while we wait for a break in the weather, rather than forcing you outside.

Do we need to leave Dundas Castle for our wedding photographs?

No. With the historic castle, courtyard, gardens and extensive grounds all on the estate, there’s already plenty of variety.

We normally prefer to use those locations in short bursts so you spend more time enjoying your wedding and less time disappearing for photographs.
