One of the things we enjoy most about photographing weddings here is that the venue never looks exactly the same twice. The gardens change constantly through spring, summer, autumn and winter, so the best locations for photographs depend on the season, weather and light on the day.
We’ve photographed weddings in and around the Caledonian Hall, John Muir Grove and John Hope Gateway, as well as portraits throughout the gardens, giving us a good understanding of how the different spaces work photographically.
Our approach is relaxed and unobtrusive, combining genuine documentary moments with natural portraits that make use of the Garden without turning your wedding day into a long photoshoot.

Why the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh Works So Well for Weddings
Few Edinburgh wedding venues change as dramatically through the year as the Botanics. The same part of the Garden can look completely different in spring blossom, high summer greenery, autumn colour or the softer light of winter.
The venue also gives couples a useful mix of indoor and outdoor wedding spaces. You can marry beneath the giant redwoods in John Muir Grove, celebrate in the historic Caledonian Hall, or use the contemporary John Hope Gateway for a larger reception. RBGE currently offers wedding spaces for everything from intimate celebrations to larger events, with the John Hope Gateway accommodating up to 200 guests for dining and 300 for an evening reception.
From a photography point of view, the Garden itself is the real strength. There are so many different backgrounds within walking distance that we rarely use the same locations at two weddings.
That doesn’t mean spending hours wandering around looking for photographs. After 14 weddings at the Botanics, we’ve learned to choose a small number of locations that look particularly good on the day, create the photographs efficiently, and get you back to your guests.
The venue is also entirely wheelchair accessible across its wedding spaces, which can be particularly helpful when planning how guests move between the ceremony, gardens and reception areas.
Wedding Ceremony and Reception Spaces at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
The Botanics offers several very different wedding spaces, from an outdoor ceremony beneath giant redwoods to larger indoor receptions overlooking the gardens.
Caledonian Hall
The Caledonian Hall is one of the main all-day wedding venues at the Botanics and overlooks the Rock Garden on the east side of the Garden.
It suits civil and humanist ceremonies and currently accommodates up to 100 guests for a ceremony or seated dinner, with evening receptions of up to 120 guests.
Having photographed weddings here, we particularly like the amount of natural light from the large windows and how quickly we can move from the Hall into the surrounding gardens for portraits.
John Muir Grove
For couples wanting an outdoor ceremony, John Muir Grove is one of the Botanics’ most distinctive options.
The circle of giant redwoods creates an almost cathedral-like setting, and RBGE’s current wedding information lists capacity for up to 120 guests, including seating for 40. It is available during daylight Garden opening hours for civil and humanist ceremonies.
We’ve photographed ceremonies here and love how different it feels from a conventional indoor venue. The height of the trees, filtered light and surrounding greenery make the ceremony photographs immediately recognisable.
Because it is outdoors, it is worth discussing bad-weather arrangements with the venue in advance rather than assuming an indoor alternative will automatically be available.
John Hope Gateway
The John Hope Gateway is the Botanics’ largest wedding venue and has a much more contemporary feel than the Caledonian Hall.
Its floor-to-ceiling windows and terrace overlook the Biodiversity Garden, and the current wedding information lists capacity for up to 200 guests for dining and 300 for an evening dancing reception.
We’ve photographed celebrations here too, so we’re familiar with the contrast between the bright modern interior and the surrounding gardens.
Smaller Wedding Options
The Botanics also offers smaller spaces, including the Chinese Pavilion, which currently accommodates ceremonies of up to 25 guests, and the Patrick Geddes Room for intimate dining and receptions.
These give couples useful alternatives when they want a much smaller celebration rather than hiring one of the main wedding venues.
Best Wedding Photo Locations at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
After photographing 14 weddings at the Botanics, we’ve learned that choosing the best locations is less about following a fixed route and more about seeing what the Garden is doing on the day.
The planting, colour and light change constantly throughout the year, so somewhere that looks spectacular at a spring wedding might be completely different by late summer or autumn. Rather than trying to recreate photographs from another couple’s wedding, we look for the areas that are working particularly well for you.
The Rock Garden
The Rock Garden is one of the most useful areas for photography, particularly for weddings at the Caledonian Hall, because it sits immediately beside the venue.
Its paths, planting, stonework and changes in height give us several different backgrounds within a relatively small area, so we can create plenty of variety without taking you away from your guests for long.
RBGE currently allocates this area for separately booked wedding photography sessions when available.
John Muir Grove
The giant redwoods in John Muir Grove work beautifully for portraits and wedding ceremonies.
Their height and scale give photographs a completely different feel from the more colourful planted areas of the Garden, while the filtered light beneath the trees can be particularly flattering.
Because we’ve photographed ceremonies and portraits here, we know how the light changes beneath the trees and how to create photos without spending a long time walking around looking for locations.
The Chinese Hillside and Pond
The Chinese Hillside and surrounding pond area offer a softer, more natural setting, with winding paths, mature planting and seasonal colour.
It can look dramatically different at different times of year, which is why we prefer to decide on the day whether it is one of the locations worth using rather than treating it as a compulsory stop on every wedding.
The Woodland Garden and Arboretum
The Woodland Garden and Arboretum offer strong options when you want something simpler and greener, with mature trees providing depth, texture, and shade.
These areas can be particularly useful on bright days when direct sunlight makes some of the more open parts of the Garden less flattering for portraits.
Seasonal Colour Around the Garden
Sometimes the best location isn’t one of the obvious landmarks.
A flowering tree, autumn leaves, a particular border or a patch of beautiful evening light might only look exceptional for a few weeks — or even a few hours.
That is one of the biggest advantages of having photographed 14 weddings at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. We know the Garden well enough to have favourite areas, but we don’t assume they will always be the best choice. We look at what is actually happening with the light, weather and planting on your wedding day.
Pre-Wedding and Engagement Photos at the Botanics
We’ve also photographed several pre-wedding and engagement shoots at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh for couples who were getting married at the Botanics.
These sessions are a lovely way to become more comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding while giving us more time to explore the Garden without a wedding-day timetable to think about.
They can also produce a very different set of photographs from the wedding itself. An engagement shoot might take place in a completely different season, with different planting, colours and light, so the Garden can almost feel like another location.

RBGE controls photography access. Current wedding arrangements include up to one hour of photography around the Gardens, while standalone wedding photography sessions need to be booked separately and are subject to availability and a venue fee.
Exact access can also depend on which parts of the Garden are available on the day, so we always work within the photography arrangements agreed with the Botanics team.
How the Botanics Changes Through the Seasons
One of the things that makes the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh so interesting to photograph is that the setting changes constantly throughout the year.
After 14 weddings at the Botanics, we’ve seen how dramatically the same locations can change between spring, summer, autumn and winter.
Spring Weddings
Spring brings fresh greenery, blossom and softer colour throughout the Garden.
It’s one of our favourite times for portraits because there can be lots of delicate colour without the heavier foliage you get later in the year.
Summer Weddings
By summer, the Garden feels much fuller and greener, with mature planting creating strong natural backgrounds almost everywhere you look.
John Muir Grove can feel particularly impressive at this time of year, and the longer evenings also give us opportunities for portraits later in the day, when the light becomes softer.
Autumn Weddings
Autumn can completely transform the Botanics.
Changing leaves, warmer tones and fallen foliage give the photographs a noticeably different character from a spring or summer wedding, and some areas that are quite understated earlier in the year suddenly become the strongest locations.
Winter Weddings
Winter weddings have a quieter feel, with less foliage but more emphasis on the structure of the trees, pathways and Garden architecture.
The lower winter sun can also create beautiful light when conditions cooperate.
We don’t think there is one “best” season for a wedding at the Botanics. Each part of the year offers something different, and our job is to find the locations that look their best on your particular wedding day rather than expecting the Garden to look the same year-round.
What We’ve Learned From Photographing 14 Weddings at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
After photographing 14 weddings at the Botanics, we’ve learned a few practical tips that make the photography feel easier and more natural on your day.
Don’t Try to Photograph the Whole Garden
The Botanics is huge, and trying to cover every possible location would quickly turn your wedding into a long walking tour.
We normally choose a handful of areas that look particularly good on the day, giving you plenty of variety without keeping you away from your guests for too long.
The Best Location Can Change From One Wedding to the Next
Season, weather, planting and light all make a big difference here.
A location that was perfect at one wedding might not be the strongest choice at the next, so we prefer to stay flexible rather than follow the same route every time.
Outdoor Ceremonies Need a Weather Plan
John Muir Grove is a beautiful ceremony setting, but Edinburgh weather can change quickly.
If you’re planning an outdoor ceremony, it’s worth agreeing your wet-weather backup with the venue in advance so there’s no uncertainty on the day.
Bright Sun Can Be More Challenging Than Rain
A sunny day sounds ideal, but strong midday light can be surprisingly difficult in open parts of the Garden.
When that happens, we use areas with softer shade, mature trees and more controlled light rather than forcing portraits into harsh sunshine.
Short Portrait Sessions Work Best
Because there are so many strong locations nearby, we don’t need one long portrait session.
A few short opportunities during the day usually work better, especially if the light improves later or another part of the Garden suddenly looks particularly good.

Yes. John Muir Grove is the main outdoor wedding ceremony space, surrounded by giant redwoods and suitable for civil and humanist ceremonies.
Because it is outdoors, RBGE recommends having a wet-weather alternative arranged in advance. The venue says inclement-weather provision may be available, but it cannot always be guaranteed.
How many guests can the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh accommodate?
It depends on the space and how you plan to use it.
The Caledonian Hall accommodates up to around 100 seated guests, while the John Hope Gateway can host up to 200 for dinner and 300 for an evening reception. Confirm the latest layout and capacity for your particular wedding with the RBGE events team.

Yes. Current RBGE wedding arrangements include up to one hour of photography around the Gardens.

The indoor wedding spaces give us alternatives, and because the Garden can change quickly after a shower, we can also use short breaks in the weather rather than committing to one long outdoor portrait session.

What is the best time of year for a Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh wedding?
There isn’t one best season.
Spring blossom, summer greenery, autumn colour and the structure and lower light of winter all create very different photographs. Having photographed weddings here throughout the year, we prefer to work with what the Garden looks like on your particular date rather than trying to recreate photographs from another season.
Do we need to leave the Botanics for our wedding photographs?
No. The Garden already offers plenty of variety.
We usually keep portraits relatively short and use a handful of carefully chosen locations, so you spend more time enjoying your wedding and less time walking around having photographs taken.
