Dalmahoy Hotel: A Historic Country House Wedding Venue

Dalmahoy’s original manor house dates from the 18th century and gives the venue much of its character, particularly around the main entrance, stonework, staircase and surrounding parkland.

For wedding photography, that combination of historic architecture and open grounds gives us plenty of variety without needing to travel away from the venue. We can move from photos around the house to the lawns, woodland, golf course, and water, depending on the light, weather, and how much time you want to spend on portraits.

That flexibility is one reason we enjoy photographing weddings at Dalmahoy: the estate has several very different-looking locations, so we can choose what works best on the day rather than relying on one fixed spot.

Wedding Rooms at Dalmahoy Hotel

Dalmahoy offers several different spaces for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and evening celebrations, ranging from intimate rooms within the original manor house to the much larger Dalmahoy Suite.

From a photography perspective, the rooms have very different characters. The period rooms offer historic features and natural window light, while the Dalmahoy Suite works well for larger celebrations, speeches, and evening photography.

We’ve photographed weddings across these spaces, so below we’ve included the practical differences that are most useful when thinking about how your wedding — and your photographs — might flow through the venue.

Dalmahoy Suite

The Dalmahoy Suite is the venue’s main space for larger weddings, and we’ve photographed ceremonies, wedding breakfasts, speeches, first dances and busy evening receptions here.

Its size gives couples plenty of flexibility, and the room can be configured differently depending on the number of guests and how the day is planned.

From a photography point of view, it works particularly well during speeches and the evening because there’s space for us to move around discreetly and photograph both the person speaking and the reactions around the room.

Later, the dance floor gives us good opportunities to photograph the first dance and the atmosphere once the evening celebrations get going.

The Boardroom

The Boardroom is one of Dalmahoy’s more intimate wedding spaces, set within the original manor house.

Its period details, chandeliers, and large windows give it a very different feel from the Dalmahoy Suite, making it particularly suited to smaller ceremonies and celebrations where you want more of the historic house’s character in your photographs.

The natural light from the windows is useful during the day, while the room’s architectural features give us plenty of context without needing to move far from the ceremony itself.

Lothian Room

The Lothian Room is another intimate space within the original manor house, with large windows, period details and a prominent fireplace.

For photography, the windows provide useful natural light for daytime ceremonies and celebrations, while the fireplace and traditional interior offer strong backgrounds for candid moments and smaller group photographs.

It has a noticeably different character from the larger Dalmahoy Suite, so it can work particularly well for couples planning a smaller wedding who want the historic side of Dalmahoy to feature more prominently in their photographs.

Castle Room

The Castle Room is Dalmahoy’s most intimate wedding space, set within the historic manor house.

It suits very small ceremonies and celebrations where the emphasis is on keeping everyone together in a more private setting.

From a photography point of view, smaller rooms like this encourage us to work quietly and make careful use of the available light and surroundings, rather than trying to turn an intimate wedding into a large-scale photoshoot.

For couples planning a small Dalmahoy wedding or civil ceremony, it offers a very different atmosphere from the larger function spaces elsewhere in the hotel.

Church Weddings at St Mary’s Dalmahoy

If you’d prefer a traditional church ceremony, St Mary’s Dalmahoy is located within the grounds of the Dalmahoy estate, only a short walk from the hotel.

We’ve photographed weddings at St Mary’s Dalmahoy as part of Dalmahoy wedding days, so we know how well it works for couples who want a church service without losing the convenience of having the rest of the day centred around the hotel.

From a photography point of view, it also adds nice variety to the day. You can have the ceremony in the church, then return to Dalmahoy Hotel for drinks, portraits, the wedding breakfast, and the evening celebrations, with plenty of great photo spots in between.

For couples planning a church wedding at Dalmahoy, it’s a very practical option because guests don’t need to travel between completely separate venues, and the whole day still feels connected.

Dalmahoy Wedding Photo Locations: Grounds, Gardens & Golf Course

One of the biggest advantages of photographing a wedding at Dalmahoy is the amount of outdoor space available around the hotel.

The rear staircase is particularly useful for family groups and larger wedding-party photographs because it gives us height, structure and a recognisable Dalmahoy backdrop without needing to move far from the main building.

For couple portraits, we regularly use the lawns, tree-lined paths, golf course and the area around the water. Each gives a different look, so we can choose locations based on the light, weather and how much time you want to spend away from your guests.

One of our favourite areas is beside the water, where we can photograph you both with the manor house in the background. Dalmahoy staff will often take us out into the grounds by golf buggy, which makes it much easier to reach quieter locations without using up too much of your wedding day.

If the weather is good, the open parkland gives us plenty of space for relaxed portraits and wider photographs that show the setting. If conditions change, we can stay much closer to the hotel and still create a varied set of images around the house and immediate grounds.

That flexibility is one of the main reasons Dalmahoy works so well for wedding photography.
