Why Norton House Hotel Works So Well for Weddings
Norton House gives couples a useful mix of country-house character and modern wedding spaces without being far from Edinburgh.
One of its biggest strengths is the amount of space around the hotel. The estate sits on 55 acres of private grounds, with mature trees, lawns, gardens, and a long, tree-lined drive that gives us plenty of options for outdoor photographs without leaving the venue.
Inside, the contrast between the traditional main house and the more contemporary Garden Suite means different parts of the day can have a distinct look while still feeling connected.
From a photography perspective, that variety is particularly useful. We can work indoors if the weather changes, step into the gardens when conditions improve, and usually create a varied set of portraits without taking you away from your guests for long.
Wedding Rooms at Norton House Hotel
Across the 36 weddings we’ve photographed at Norton House, we’ve worked in different parts of the hotel, from larger celebrations to much smaller, more intimate ceremonies.
Norton House currently highlights the Usher Suite and Garden Suite as its main wedding spaces, alongside several smaller rooms for intimate weddings.
The Usher Suite
The Usher Suite is the grander, more traditional option and currently accommodates ceremonies of up to 140 guests.
With chandeliers, a private bar and dance floor, it works particularly well for couples who want the character of the original house and plenty of space for the ceremony and evening celebrations.
From a photography point of view, the room’s scale gives us space to work unobtrusively during the ceremony, speeches, and dancing without constantly being close to the action.
The Garden Suite
The Garden Suite has a much more contemporary feel, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gardens and its own private terrace.
The hotel’s current ceremony information lists capacity for up to 120 guests, while the large windows provide plenty of natural daylight throughout the room.
It’s particularly good photographically because we can move easily between the bright interior, terrace and surrounding gardens without taking you away from your guests for long.
Intimate Wedding Rooms
For smaller weddings, Norton House also offers several more intimate rooms within the main house.
The hotel currently highlights rooms with period features and views across the grounds for ceremonies of up to around 40 guests, making them useful for couples planning a smaller celebration without needing one of the main suites.
Best Wedding Photo Locations at Norton House Hotel
After photographing 36 weddings at Norton House, we’ve learned that one of the venue’s biggest photographic advantages is the amount of variety available without needing to leave the grounds.
The Tree-Lined Drive
The long driveway leading to Norton House is one of our favourite outdoor locations, particularly when the trees are full of colour or the light filters through them.
It gives photographs a very different feel from those immediately around the hotel and works particularly well for a short newlywed portrait session.
The Gardens and Grounds
The lawns, mature trees and established gardens give us plenty of options throughout the year.
Rather than following the same route at every wedding, we choose locations based on the season, available light, and the day’s weather. That keeps the photographs natural and makes the most of how the grounds actually look at the time of your wedding.
The Garden Suite Terrace
For weddings in the Garden Suite, the private terrace is particularly useful because we can step outside for portraits or candid photographs without taking you away from the reception.
It also gives us an easy indoor-outdoor option when the weather is changing quickly.
Around the Main House
The original house, entrance and surrounding architecture provide a more traditional backdrop that contrasts nicely with the gardens and contemporary Garden Suite.
We usually only need a short amount of time in each location, so there’s no need to turn your wedding into a long portrait session just to create variety.

After photographing 36 weddings at Norton House, we’ve learned a few practical tips that can make the photography feel easier and more relaxed on the day.
The Grounds Give You Plenty of Variety
You don’t need to disappear for a long portrait session to create a varied set of photographs here.
The drive, gardens, main house, and Garden Suite all offer different looks within a relatively small area, so we can usually create plenty of variety in short bursts throughout the day.
The Garden Suite Works Well in Changeable Weather
The Garden Suite is particularly useful in unpredictable weather because we can move quickly between the bright interior, private terrace, and gardens.
If a shower passes through, we can simply work indoors for a while and step outside when conditions improve rather than forcing the photography around the weather.
Seasonal Light Changes the Best Locations
The strongest location at Norton House isn’t always the same at every wedding.
The gardens, trees, and drive can look completely different depending on the season, time of day, and weather, so we choose locations based on what works best at that particular wedding rather than following a fixed route.
Leave Time for Congratulations After the Ceremony
As with many venues, the moments immediately after the ceremony are often some of the most enjoyable parts of the day.
We prefer to let couples spend time hugging, chatting and celebrating with their guests before organising family photographs or newlywed portraits, rather than pulling them away as soon as the ceremony finishes.

I would not hesitate to recommend him to friends, family or anyone as we are extremely happy with the service
My husband and I were lucky enough to have Jon as a very good friend, so when we got engaged, there was no question as to who we would use to photograph our wedding. Although a friend, he was still extremely professional with us from start to finish – discussing our options with packages, albums, group photos etc. On the day itself, Jon turned up well dressed in plenty of time and was very good at putting people at ease, melting into the background and capturing some truly stunning shots. A lot of the photos were captured without people being aware – these are fantastically natural and a great memento of the day. Although I know very little about cameras, I know that his have produced shots of the highest quality and he has a very good eye as to what will make a good shot. We now have a beautiful Italian cream leather bound album with thick metallic pages filled with fantastic photos as a result. I would not hesitate to recommend him to friends, family or anyone as we are extremely happy with the service and the results of his hard work.
