After 30 weddings here, we know considerably more than where the best-looking rooms are. Prestonfield House sits within 20 acres of gardens and parkland at the foot of Arthur’s Seat, giving you the privacy and atmosphere of a country estate while still being only a few minutes from central Edinburgh.

Why Prestonfield House Works So Well for Weddings
One of the things we value most about Prestonfield is the variety it offers without needing to leave the estate.
Smaller weddings can make use of the beautifully atmospheric rooms inside the house, while larger celebrations can move into The Stables for a completely different feel. Outside, the gardens and parkland give us plenty of options for family groups and newlywed portraits without taking you away from your guests for long.
From a photographer’s point of view, Prestonfield works particularly well because the interiors, gardens and larger event spaces all have very different characters. We can move from dark, richly decorated rooms to open lawns, tree-lined paths and the more dramatic scale of The Stables within the same wedding day.
The venue sits within 20 acres of gardens and parkland, so it feels secluded despite being only a short distance from central Edinburgh.
And when the weather turns — which it inevitably does from time to time in Edinburgh — the range of indoor spaces gives us plenty of ways to adapt rather than letting the forecast dictate the photographs.
Wedding Spaces at Prestonfield House
We’ve photographed weddings throughout the house, gardens, and Stables, from tiny intimate celebrations to much larger wedding days. Each space has a very different photographic character, so the right choice depends on your guest numbers, the atmosphere you want, and how you’d like the day to flow.
The Stables — Best for a Larger Prestonfield Wedding
The Stables are Prestonfield’s main space for larger weddings, with their circular layout, red velvet, gilt detailing and large central dance floor creating a completely different atmosphere from the rooms inside the house.
Prestonfield currently positions The Stables for larger weddings, beginning at around 120 guests, with the space also capable of accommodating significantly larger celebrations depending on the layout.
Our photographer’s view: this is one of the most distinctive wedding rooms in Edinburgh, but it’s also a space where experience with low light really matters. There isn’t the abundant window light you’d find in a modern ballroom, so we use the existing atmosphere rather than trying to make the room look unnaturally bright.
During ceremonies, the circular shape gives us useful angles around the room without constantly crossing in front of guests. Later, that same layout works brilliantly for speeches, first dances and ceilidhs because we can photograph not only the action on the dance floor but all the reactions happening around it.
If you’re planning a Stables wedding, we’d always recommend giving yourselves a little time to enjoy the room once the evening celebrations start — this is where some of the most energetic photographs of a Prestonfield wedding happen.
Rhubarb — Atmospheric Celebrations Inside the House
Rhubarb gives you a very different Prestonfield experience from The Stables, with richly decorated interiors and a much more intimate feel.
We’ve photographed ceremonies and celebrations here over the years, and it works particularly well when you want the character of Prestonfield itself to remain a major part of the wedding rather than moving into a separate ballroom space.
Our photographer’s view: Rhubarb’s darker interiors create a wonderfully atmospheric backdrop, particularly for ceremonies and candid photographs. Rather than trying to remove that atmosphere with lots of artificial light, we prefer to work with the room’s existing character and carefully add light only where it helps.
It also keeps you close to the other rooms and gardens, which means we can move between indoor photographs and the grounds without taking you away from your guests for long.
The Garden Room — Light, Gardens and a Private Terrace
The Garden Room is one of Prestonfield’s brightest private spaces and gives you direct access to its own covered terrace and the gardens beyond.
Prestonfield currently lists the room for up to 50 guests on circular tables, making it particularly useful for smaller and medium-sized celebrations.
Our photographer’s view: compared with many of Prestonfield’s darker, richly decorated interiors, the Garden Room gives us plenty of natural light and an easy transition outdoors.
That makes it particularly useful for wedding-day photographs because we can move quickly between the room, terrace and lawn. If the weather is changeable, the covered terrace also gives us another option without committing everyone to standing outside in the rain.
For couples who want the character of Prestonfield but also love brighter, more natural-looking photographs, this is one of the most versatile rooms in the house.
The Italian Room — An Intimate Historic Setting
The Italian Room is one of Prestonfield’s most distinctive smaller rooms, with green-and-gold painted panelling inspired by an eighteenth-century Grand Tour.
It currently seats up to 24 guests, making it particularly well suited to intimate wedding breakfasts and smaller celebrations.
Our photographer’s view: because the room is relatively compact, photography here is less about creating dozens of different angles and more about quietly capturing conversations, reactions and the atmosphere around the table.
Its painted walls also give the photographs an unmistakable sense of Prestonfield, so we generally avoid overcomplicating things — the room itself already provides a beautiful backdrop.
Other Prestonfield Rooms We Use for Wedding Photography
The Tapestry Room — Dramatic Interiors for Portraits and Candids
The Tapestry Room is one of Prestonfield’s most recognisable interiors, with historic tapestries, gilded details, portraits and a large fireplace creating a very different look from the brighter Garden Room or the scale of The Stables.
Our photographer’s view: we tend to think of the Tapestry Room as a photographic setting rather than a space where we need to manufacture lots of formal pictures. It works beautifully for relaxed portraits, quiet moments between parts of the day and candid photographs when guests are gathering for drinks.
The darker interior is part of its character, so we prefer to work with that atmosphere rather than trying to make it look artificially bright.
The Stuart Room — Best for Very Intimate Celebrations
The Stuart Room is one of Prestonfield’s smallest private dining spaces and currently suits around 14–16 guests, depending on the chair layout.
Our photographer’s view: with such an intimate room, photography is naturally very discreet. We’re looking for conversations, reactions and details rather than constantly moving people around for posed photographs.
It can work particularly well for couples planning a very small wedding where dinner feels more like an elegant family gathering than a traditional large reception.
The Leather Room — Drinks, Conversations and Quiet Moments
The Leather Room is one of Prestonfield’s historic drawing rooms, with richly decorated leather wall panels and a much more intimate atmosphere than the larger wedding spaces. Prestonfield also pairs it with the Stuart Room for pre-dinner drinks.
Our photographer’s view: this is the kind of room where we like to step back and photograph people naturally. We’ve photographed ceremonies, drinks receptions, conversations and newlywed portraits in this beautiful location.
The Whisky Room — Characterful and Relaxed
The Whisky Room is another smaller drawing room, with dark interiors, antique equestrian portraits, fireside seating and plenty of Prestonfield character.
Our photographer’s view: it works particularly well for candid photographs and quieter moments later in the day. It also gives us another useful indoor option when the weather makes the gardens less appealing.

One of Prestonfield’s biggest photographic advantages is that you don’t need to leave the estate for beautiful wedding portraits.
The house sits within 20 acres of gardens and parkland, giving us lawns, mature trees, paths, architecture and plenty of quieter areas only a short walk from the main building.
After 30 weddings at Prestonfield House, we’ve photographed the grounds in every season and in just about every kind of Edinburgh weather. We don’t work from a rigid list of locations; we choose where to go based on the light, season, ground conditions and how much time you actually want to spend away from your guests.
Our photographer’s view: you normally don’t need very long. Around 20–30 minutes is enough for us to create a varied set of newlywed photographs around the house and gardens while keeping the photography relaxed.
The grounds are also ideal for family groups when the weather allows, because we have more space to organise people comfortably and can use the surrounding architecture and greenery to give the photographs a real sense of Prestonfield.
And if the rain arrives? We simply adapt. The house has enough interesting interiors and covered options that there’s no reason to spend the day staring nervously at the forecast.
What We’ve Learned From 30 Prestonfield House Weddings
After photographing 30 weddings at Prestonfield House, we’ve learned that the venue works best when you take advantage of what’s already there rather than trying to squeeze too much into the day.
The house, gardens and Stables give us very different photographic environments within one estate, so there’s rarely any need to disappear elsewhere in Edinburgh for photographs.
You Don’t Need to Leave Prestonfield for Great Wedding Photos
Prestonfield already offers far more variety than we could realistically use in one wedding day.
Within a short walk, we can move between the richly decorated interiors, lawns, mature trees, stone architecture and quieter corners of the grounds. There’s plenty to work with without adding travel time to your schedule.
For most couples, we’d much rather spend 20–30 relaxed minutes photographing around Prestonfield and then get you back to your guests than turn the afternoon into a lengthy location shoot.
Prestonfield’s Darker Interiors Are Part of Its Character
Some of Prestonfield’s most beautiful rooms are intentionally dark and atmospheric. That’s part of what makes the venue look and feel so distinctive.
We don’t try to make those rooms look like bright modern hotel ballrooms. Instead, we work with the available light and carefully add our own when it helps, while retaining the warmth, depth and character you experienced on the day.
That’s particularly important in spaces such as the Tapestry Room, Leather Room and Rhubarb, where the atmosphere is a big part of the photograph.
Winter Weddings Need a Slightly Different Timeline
Prestonfield is beautiful year-round, but in winter we pay much closer attention to daylight.
If you’d like photographs in the gardens, we’ll normally recommend making those a priority while there’s still usable natural light rather than automatically leaving all the newlywed portraits until later in the afternoon.
Once the light disappears, the interiors give us plenty to work with — but a little planning means you can have both.
Rain Usually Changes the Order, Not the Photographs
Edinburgh weather doesn’t always cooperate with a wedding schedule, and Prestonfield is exactly the kind of venue where flexibility helps.
If it’s raining when we planned to go outside, there’s usually no need to stand around waiting. We can photograph indoors, capture the drinks reception or family moments and head into the grounds later if the weather improves.
Because the house has so many visually interesting interiors and the Garden Room has its own covered terrace, we have useful alternatives rather than relying entirely on perfect weather.
Family Photographs Are Usually Easiest Outdoors
When the weather allows, we generally prefer doing family and group photographs outside.
Prestonfield’s grounds give us more space to organise people comfortably, better natural light and backgrounds that immediately show where the wedding took place.
We’ll ask for your group-photo list before the wedding so we can organise everyone efficiently rather than spending half the drinks reception trying to work out who needs to be in the next photograph.
The Stables Becomes a Completely Different Space in the Evening
One of the things we particularly enjoy about The Stables is how much the atmosphere changes as the wedding progresses.
Earlier in the day it can feel formal and dramatic for a ceremony or wedding breakfast. Once the lights drop and the dance floor fills, it becomes a very different photographic environment.
First dances, ceilidhs and packed dance floors give us some of the most energetic photographs from Prestonfield weddings — and the circular layout means there are usually reactions happening all around us rather than only on the dance floor itself.
