A Grand Edinburgh Wedding Venue in the Heart of the Old Town

Our coverage of Helen and Daniel’s wedding began with Helen and her bridesmaids getting ready in Edinburgh city centre, while Daniel and his groomsmen were already at The Signet Library welcoming guests. It gave us two very different parts of the morning to photograph — the anticipation of the preparations and the growing buzz around Parliament Square as everyone arrived.

The Signet Library sits just off Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, beside St Giles’ Cathedral, and is one of the most impressive city-centre venues we photograph. From the moment you walk through the entrance, there’s an incredible sense of scale: classical columns, book-lined galleries, ornate ceilings and that magnificent staircase connecting the two main wedding spaces.

It’s easy to understand why we include it in our guide to the best Edinburgh wedding venues. Unlike venues where most of the day happens in one room, The Signet Library gives a wedding several distinct looks without guests having to travel anywhere.

A Wedding Ceremony in the Lower Library

Helen and Daniel held their ceremony in the Lower Library, which is particularly well suited to this part of the day. The long central aisle creates a wonderful entrance, while the columns and surrounding gallery give us plenty of opportunities to photograph both the couple and the reactions of family and friends without becoming intrusive.

The venue officially allows civil, religious and humanist ceremonies in the Lower Library, and the room can also be used later for drinks, canapés and welcoming evening guests.

From a photography point of view, we particularly like the room’s depth. Rather than having everyone against a plain wall, layers of architecture, books, and columns behind the ceremony give the photographs a real sense of place.

Helen and Daniel’s ceremony was full of exactly the sort of moments we love photographing — big smiles as Helen came down the aisle, reactions from their guests, laughter during the ceremony and all the little glances between them that happen when they forget the cameras are there.

The Upper Library for the Wedding Breakfast and Evening

After the ceremony, weddings can move upstairs to the Upper Library, creating a completely different atmosphere without leaving the building. It’s a spectacular reception space with high ceilings, classical columns, bookcases, an upper balcony and the large stained-glass window at one end of the room.

The Upper Library can accommodate 50–220 guests for a wedding reception, with a built-in PA system and wooden dance floor for speeches and the evening celebrations.

Photographically, this transition works brilliantly. The Lower Library has a more intimate, architectural feel, while upstairs gives us wider views of the wedding breakfast, speeches and dance floor. It means a full wedding gallery has plenty of visual variety even if most of the day takes place inside the venue.

You also don’t need to disappear for an hour to create great couple photographs here.

The staircase inside The Signet Library is an obvious favourite, but we also love using the entrance, columns and architecture around Parliament Square. Step outside and you’re immediately surrounded by the Old Town, with St Giles’ Cathedral, the Royal Mile and several of Edinburgh’s historic closes only a few minutes away.

For Helen and Daniel, we kept their portrait time relaxed and close to the venue rather than turning it into a lengthy photoshoot. That gave us a mix of elegant indoor portraits and more informal photos as they walked together through the surrounding streets.

Confetti Outside The Signet Library

Helen and Daniel’s confetti exit was one of our favourite moments of the day. The space immediately outside The Signet Library works brilliantly because guests can gather close to the entrance while the architecture of Parliament Square still gives the photographs a strong sense of place.

We organised everyone into position, gave them a quick countdown and had Helen and Daniel walk slowly through the middle. That creates far better photographs than simply handing out confetti and hoping for the best — you want plenty of it in the air at the same time, with guests throwing up and over the couple rather than directly at their faces.

Speeches, Dinner and the Evening Reception

After the drinks reception and photographs, everyone moved upstairs to the Upper Library for the wedding breakfast and speeches.

This is another part of the day where the room really comes into its own photographically. The scale of the Upper Library lets us capture wide photographs that show the whole atmosphere of the reception, while the layout also gives us plenty of opportunities to focus on reactions during the speeches — often some of the funniest and most emotional photographs in the final gallery.

Helen and Daniel’s speeches had plenty of both, followed by the cake cutting and first dance before the evening celebrations properly got underway.

By this stage of the day, our approach becomes almost entirely documentary. We’re looking for the laughter, hugs, questionable dance moves and unexpected moments happening around the room rather than constantly directing people.

That contrast is one of the reasons we enjoy photographing weddings here so much: The Signet Library gives us elegant, architectural portraits when we want them, but it also works beautifully for the completely unscripted parts of a wedding day.

Can we have our wedding ceremony and reception at The Signet Library?

Yes. The Lower Library can host civil, religious and humanist wedding ceremonies, while the Upper Library is used for wedding breakfasts and evening receptions. This works particularly well because the day can move naturally from one space to another without guests travelling between venues.

How many guests can The Signet Library accommodate?

The Upper Library can accommodate 50–220 guests for a wedding reception. The venue can therefore work for relatively intimate celebrations as well as much larger Edinburgh weddings. Your exact layout and capacity will depend on how you plan to use the rooms, so confirm the details directly with the venue when booking.

Where is The Signet Library in Edinburgh?

The Signet Library is in Parliament Square in Edinburgh’s Old Town, immediately beside St Giles’ Cathedral and just off the Royal Mile. It’s an exceptionally convenient location for city-centre weddings and also puts some brilliant Edinburgh portrait locations within a few minutes’ walk.

Is The Signet Library good for wedding photography in bad weather?

Very much so. One of the biggest advantages, from our point of view, is the photographic variety available inside the building. The staircase, columns, libraries, galleries, and architectural details mean we can create beautiful portraits without taking you outside in heavy rain.
If the weather improves, Parliament Square and the surrounding Old Town give us plenty of outdoor options without taking you away from your guests for long.

What are the best places for wedding photos at The Signet Library?

Some of our favourites are the grand staircase, the columns and book-lined interiors of the Lower Library, and wider portraits in the Upper Library. Outside, we regularly use Parliament Square and the nearby Old Town streets and closes.
We prefer to choose locations based on the light, weather, and how busy Edinburgh is that day, rather than following the same route at every wedding.

Can we have a humanist wedding ceremony at The Signet Library?

Yes. The venue specifically allows humanist ceremonies, as well as civil and religious ceremonies, in the Lower Library.
