That experience means we know considerably more than the layout of the hotel. We know how its historic interiors photograph in different light, which spaces work particularly well for ceremonies and celebrations, where to organise family groups and how to make the most of nearby locations when you’d like a few photographs outside the hotel.

The Caledonian Edinburgh — often simply called “The Caley” — sits at the west end of Princes Street with views towards Edinburgh Castle. Its location gives you the character of a historic city-centre hotel while putting Princes Street Gardens and Edinburgh’s Old Town within easy reach. Hilton currently operates the hotel as The Caledonian Edinburgh, Curio Collection by Hilton.

You may also know the hotel by its former name, Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh – The Caledonian, which still appears in older wedding features and searches.

Wedding Spaces at The Caledonian Edinburgh

We’ve worked across The Caledonian’s main ceremony, reception and celebration spaces, from intimate weddings to much larger city-centre celebrations. Each room has a very different photographic feel, so the right choice depends on your guest numbers, the atmosphere you want and how you’d like the day to flow.

Castle Suite — The Main Space for Larger Weddings

The Castle Suite is the main wedding space at The Caledonian and one of the rooms we know particularly well. Its high ceilings, chandeliers, decorative details, and views towards Edinburgh Castle give it a distinctive feel, while the adjoining Castle Lounge helps the day flow naturally from ceremony to drinks to reception.

The hotel currently lists the Castle Suite for up to 160 guests for a banquet and 250 for a reception, depending on layout.

Our photographer’s view: this room changes dramatically throughout the day. During ceremonies, we’re looking for clean sightlines, guest reactions, and the details that make the space feel unmistakably Caledonian. Later, once the tables are set and the lights drop, it becomes brilliant for speeches, first dances and packed evening celebrations.

One of the biggest advantages is that the Castle Lounge sits immediately alongside it, giving guests somewhere to gather without breaking the flow of the wedding.

Castle Lounge — Drinks, Congratulations and Candid Moments

The Castle Lounge sits next to the Castle Suite and is used for arrival drinks and post-ceremony receptions as part of the hotel’s current wedding packages.

Our photographer’s view: this is exactly the kind of space where we like to step back and let things happen. Drinks receptions naturally create conversations, hugs, congratulations and little reactions that are far more interesting than immediately turning everyone into a formal photo line-up.

The natural light, pillars and views towards the castle also give the room a very different feel from the Castle Suite itself.

Boardroom Suite & The Connery Suite

The Boardroom Suite has been one of the wedding rooms we’ve photographed regularly at The Caledonian over the years, and it still appears under that name in the hotel’s 2025–26 wedding brochure. The hotel’s current events information now also features The Connery Suite, an oak-panelled heritage space used for celebrations and events.

With its traditional oak panelling, historic architecture and natural daylight, it has a completely different atmosphere from the larger Castle Suite.

Our photographer’s view: we’ve always liked this room photographically because the wood panelling gives the images warmth and character while the windows provide useful natural light. For a smaller wedding, we can photograph the ceremony discreetly without moving around constantly, while still capturing reactions from family and friends.

The current Connery Suite is listed for up to 50 guests for a banquet, 70 for a reception and 90 theatre-style, depending on the layout.

If you’re considering either space for your wedding, we’d recommend confirming the current room name and setup directly with The Caledonian, as its wedding brochure and live events information currently use different terminology.

Versailles Suite — Best for a More Intimate Wedding

The Versailles Suite is one of The Caledonian’s more intimate wedding spaces, with hand-painted neoclassical murals and a handmade chandelier that give it a distinctive character.

The hotel currently lists the room for weddings of up to 35 guests, making it a strong option for smaller ceremonies and celebrations.

Our photographer’s view: because the room is more compact, photography here is naturally more discreet. We focus on reactions, the ceremony itself, and the room’s details rather than trying to capture dozens of angles.

The painted walls and chandelier already give the photographs a strong sense of place, so we generally let the room do the visual work rather than overcomplicating things.

Best Wedding Photo Locations at The Caledonian Edinburgh

The Grand Staircase — One of The Caledonian’s Signature Photo Locations

The Grand Staircase is one of the most recognisable parts of The Caledonian, and somewhere we’ve photographed couples many times over the years.

Its scale, architecture, and sweeping lines make it ideal for a handful of more composed portraits without leaving the hotel.

Our photographer’s view: this is a location where a little direction works better than trying to photograph everything completely candidly. We’ll give you enough guidance to use the staircase well, then keep things relaxed so the photographs still feel like the two of you rather than a formal fashion shoot.

It’s also a very useful indoor option when Edinburgh’s weather makes an outdoor portrait session less appealing.

Princes Street Gardens — Greenery Minutes From the Hotel

One of The Caledonian’s biggest advantages is its city-centre location. Princes Street Gardens are only a short walk away, giving us greenery, pathways and views towards Edinburgh Castle without needing to build travel time into the wedding schedule.

Our photographer’s view: we don’t need long here. Around 15–20 minutes can give us a very different set of photographs from those created inside the hotel.

We’ll choose exactly where to photograph based on the season, light, weather and how busy the gardens are on the day rather than working from a fixed list of spots.

Around The Caledonian & Edinburgh’s West End

We can also create plenty of variety right around the hotel. The historic façade, nearby streets and West End architecture give the photographs a much more urban Edinburgh feel.

This works particularly well if you only want to spend 10–15 minutes away from your guests or if the gardens are especially busy.

Because we’ve photographed so many weddings here, we can adapt the route quickly rather than wasting time walking around looking for somewhere that works.

How Long Do We Need for Newlywed Photos?

For most Caledonian weddings, 20–30 minutes is plenty for a varied set of relaxed newlywed photographs.

Depending on the weather and your plans, that might mean using the Grand Staircase and hotel interiors, stepping into Princes Street Gardens, or combining a few nearby locations.

We’d much rather choose a handful of places that work brilliantly on the day than disappear with you for an hour just to tick photographs off a list.

What We’ve Learned From 26 Weddings at The Caledonian Edinburgh

After photographing 26 weddings at The Caledonian Edinburgh, we’ve learned that the hotel works best when the photography follows the flow of the day rather than being treated as a separate photoshoot. Timing, changing light, weather, and how each part of the hotel is used all influence how we approach the photography.

The Light Changes Considerably Throughout the Hotel

The Caledonian combines brighter spaces with much darker, more atmospheric interiors, so the photographic approach changes as we move around the hotel.

We work with each room’s character rather than trying to make everything look equally bright. Where additional lighting helps — particularly later in the day — we use it carefully while retaining the atmosphere you actually experienced.

That becomes especially important during winter weddings and evening receptions when Edinburgh’s natural daylight disappears early.

Winter Weddings Need an Earlier Portrait Plan

During Edinburgh’s winter months, we pay much closer attention to when daylight disappears.

If outdoor photographs are important to you, we’ll normally suggest doing them earlier rather than automatically leaving all the newlywed portraits until after dinner or late in the afternoon.

Once it gets dark, The Caledonian’s interiors give us plenty to work with — so a little planning means you can have both outdoor photographs and atmospheric evening images.

Give Yourselves Time for the Congratulations

One of the easiest mistakes after a ceremony is immediately rushing into family photographs or disappearing for newlywed portraits.

We’d much rather give you a few minutes to enjoy being married. Hugs, laughter, happy tears and congratulations from the people around you often produce some of the most meaningful photographs of the day.

We can organise the formal photographs afterwards.

Evening Celebrations Need a Different Photographic Approach

Once dinner and speeches are finished, the atmosphere at The Caledonian changes completely.

First dances, ceilidhs and busy dance floors are about movement, reactions and energy rather than perfectly posed photographs. We’ll use additional lighting where needed, while still letting the room and the evening’s atmosphere remain part of the images.

Some of our favourite Caledonian photographs have come from those completely unscripted moments late in the day.

How much time do we need for wedding photos at The Caledonian?

For most weddings, 20–30 minutes is plenty for relaxed newlywed photographs. We can use the hotel interiors, the Grand Staircase, and nearby locations, or include a short walk into Princes Street Gardens if the weather and timing work.
We usually prefer a short, focused portrait session rather than taking you away from your guests for an hour.

Where are the best wedding photo locations at The Caledonian Edinburgh?

Inside the hotel, the Grand Staircase is one of our favourite locations, while the corridors, windows and historic interiors give us plenty of alternatives depending on the light and how the hotel is being used.
Outside, Princes Street Gardens are only a few minutes away and can provide greenery and Edinburgh Castle views. The streets immediately around the hotel also work well when we want a more urban city-centre feel.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?

Rain rarely causes a problem at The Caledonian because there are so many photographic options inside the hotel.
We can use the Grand Staircase and other interior areas while watching for a break in the weather. Edinburgh conditions can change quickly, so we generally keep the plan flexible rather than deciding weeks beforehand that photographs must happen in one particular place.
If it stays wet all day, you can still have a varied wedding gallery without spending your afternoon standing outside in the rain.

Is The Caledonian good for a winter wedding?

Yes. The Caledonian works particularly well for winter weddings because its atmospheric interiors give us plenty of photographic options once the daylight fades.
If outdoor photographs are important to you, we’ll help plan those around the available light earlier in the day, then make more use of the hotel interiors and additional lighting later on.

Can we have family group photographs at The Caledonian?

Absolutely. Before the wedding, we’ll ask you for a short list of the family groups that matter to you, so we can organise them quickly.
The best location depends on your guest numbers, weather and what else is happening in the hotel at the time. We’ll decide on the day rather than forcing everyone into a location that isn’t working particularly well.

Do we need to go into Edinburgh for our wedding photographs?

No. The Caledonian itself gives us enough variety to create a strong set of photographs without leaving the hotel.
Princes Street Gardens and the surrounding streets are useful additional options, but they’re exactly that — options. If you’d rather spend the drinks reception with your guests, or the weather isn’t cooperating, we can keep everything close to the hotel.

About Jonathon Fowler
