The Roseate Edinburgh is a stylish boutique wedding venue in the city’s West End, combining elegant Victorian townhouses with a more relaxed, contemporary feel than a traditional large hotel.

As The Roseate Edinburgh wedding photographer team for Jodie and Carl’s intimate winter celebration, we photographed everything from their ceremony in the Club Privé Conservatory through to relaxed portraits around the hotel, champagne in the bridal suite and an evening reception with their closest family and friends.

From a photography point of view, The Roseate works particularly well for smaller weddings. The conservatory, historic interiors, stone entrance and characterful rooms give us plenty of variety without needing to take couples away from their guests for long.

Jodie & Carl’s Winter Wedding at The Roseate Edinburgh

Jodie and Carl chose The Roseate Edinburgh for an intimate winter wedding with their closest family and friends. The hotel’s scale suited their plans perfectly, giving the day a relaxed, private feel while still offering plenty of character for photographs.

Carl wore an emerald-green velvet jacket from Slaters Menswear, which looked fantastic against the stonework and warm interiors of the hotel. It was a brilliant alternative to a traditional black suit and added a strong splash of colour throughout the photographs.

Jodie chose a beautifully simple gown from Wed2B, paired with pearl details and a clean, modern look that suited both her and the venue. Susie Campbell did her makeup, and Amy at Studio 29 Hair did her hair.

Winter weddings at The Roseate have a very different atmosphere from a bright summer celebration. The softer daylight, warm interiors and richer colours worked beautifully for Jodie and Carl’s day and gave their photographs a distinctive winter feel without us needing to manufacture it.

A Winter Wedding Ceremony in the Club Privé Conservatory

Jodie and Carl held their civil ceremony in the Club Privé Conservatory, one of the spaces that makes The Roseate particularly well suited to smaller weddings. The large windows bring plenty of daylight into the room while still keeping everyone warm and comfortable during a winter celebration.

Allyson from Edinburgh Civil Celebrants conducted their ceremony, and it felt wonderfully personal and relaxed. With such a small group of family and friends, we could photograph reactions around the room as well as Jodie and Carl without moving around or interrupting the ceremony.

From a photography point of view, the Conservatory works especially well in winter because the windows give us useful natural light even when conditions outside are dull. We still expose carefully for faces and the changing light rather than assuming a bright-looking room will photograph itself.

After the ceremony, we kept Jodie and Carl’s portraits relaxed and close to The Roseate rather than taking them away from their guests for a long photoshoot.

The hotel’s stone entrance and townhouse architecture gave us a strong exterior backdrop, while the surrounding West End streets added a more recognisably Edinburgh feel without needing to travel far.

Unscripted Champagne Toasts in the Bridal Suite

One of the most memorable moments of Jodie and Carl’s wedding happened back in the bridal suite.

Jodie climbed into the freestanding copper bathtub in her wedding dress, heels and veil, champagne in hand. It was completely spontaneous and gave us one of those photographs that could never have been planned in advance.

Moments like this are exactly why we prefer to leave room in the timeline for things to happen naturally. Rather than trying to manufacture every photograph, we stay alert to the little bursts of personality that make each wedding feel different.

The Roseate’s suites are particularly good for this kind of photography because they have plenty of character of their own, so even an unplanned moment can still feel visually connected to the venue.

Wedding Breakfast and Reception at The Roseate Edinburgh

After their portraits, Jodie and Carl rejoined their guests for the wedding breakfast and the rest of the celebrations. Keeping the ceremony, photographs, meal and evening together at The Roseate made the day feel wonderfully relaxed — particularly with such an intimate guest list.

At the time of their wedding, Jodie and Carl’s reception took place in The Dunstane Restaurant & Bar. The hotel’s dining offering has since evolved, with KIN by Gary Maclean now its current restaurant, while The Roseate’s wedding information highlights Club Privé for wedding breakfasts and intimate celebrations of up to 32 guests.

From a photography point of view, smaller celebrations like this give us the freedom to focus on the interactions between people rather than constantly moving between large groups. Speeches, hugs, laughter and reactions all happen close together, which helps the finished gallery feel full of personality.

Jodie and Carl’s day was a perfect example. The ceremony, live music, portraits, champagne and dinner all flowed naturally without lots of travel or long gaps in the celebrations.

That’s one of the things we particularly like about photographing intimate weddings at The Roseate: there’s enough variety in the building and surrounding streets to create a visually interesting gallery while still allowing the couple to spend most of the day with their guests.

Yes. The Roseate offers a winter wedding package from November to March, and from a photography point of view the venue works well in colder months because it has plenty of characterful indoor spaces as well as the Conservatory’s large windows.
The main thing we watch in winter is the shorter daylight window. We normally keep outdoor portraits flexible and work around the weather rather than building the photography around a rigid plan.
