Vibrant & Authentic Edinburgh Wedding Photographer

20 Years of Photographing Weddings in Edinburgh
Welcome to Jonathon Fowler Photography, formerly Love Wedding Photos and Film. We’re Jonathon and Claire, Edinburgh wedding photographers and a husband-and-wife team who’ve photographed weddings together since 2006.
Of the 700+ weddings we’ve photographed across Scotland, more than 500 have been right here in Edinburgh — from intimate City Chambers ceremonies to celebrations at the Balmoral Hotel, Prestonfield House, Mansfield Traquair, Edinburgh Castle and beyond.
Our approach blends natural documentary photography with relaxed editorial portraits, giving you vibrant photographs without turning your wedding into a photoshoot.
Zero awkward posing. No stiff smiles. Just real moments, natural photographs and relaxed portraits that make you look fantastic without all the posing.
Editorial & Documentary Wedding Photography
Hate Having Your Photo Taken? We Completely Understand.
Most couples tell us they don’t particularly enjoy having their photograph taken. That’s completely fine — you don’t need to know how to pose or spend hours away from your guests to get photographs you’ll love.
For most of the wedding, we work quietly and naturally, photographing what’s happening without constantly directing you. We chat with your family and guests, blend into the day and let the genuine moments happen.
When it’s time for your newlywed portraits, we’ll give you a little guidance so you’re not left wondering what to do. Nothing stiff or over-posed — just enough direction to help you feel comfortable and look your best.
That balance between documentary photography and relaxed portraits is a big part of how we work. You can read more about our editorial and documentary wedding photography approach.

Jonathon and Claire are the loveliest couple ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
From our very first communication they made us feel special and were so interested in who we are as people! They tailored everything just for us, and had they not radiated such beauty and kindness, we wouldn’t have even known they were there… and for two people like us who HATE getting photos taken, we had a great time and felt so comfortable!
We got married on 31st December, and they gave up their own celebrations with their families to help us capture ours…
We truly hit the jackpot, and wouldn’t ever trust anyone else to capture our special celebrations and moments!
Please don’t pass up the opportunity on having these two look after your special day! Very trustworthy and fantastic value for money.

20 Years and 500 Edinburgh Weddings Later…
Photographing 500 weddings in Edinburgh has taught us considerably more than where to take a pretty photograph. We know how quickly the Royal Mile fills with visitors, where to disappear when Edinburgh’s weather inevitably has other ideas, which locations work in harsh midday sunshine and how little time you really need away from your guests to create beautiful portraits.

Edinburgh Weather Doesn’t Worry Us
Sunshine, drizzle, sideways rain and occasionally all three within twenty minutes — we’ve photographed Edinburgh weddings through the lot. Experience means knowing when to change plans, where beautiful covered locations are nearby and when it’s actually worth embracing the weather. Some of our favourite photographs have happened on days when the forecast looked absolutely dreadful.

Beautiful Photographs Without Losing Hours of Your Wedding
You don’t need a two-hour Edinburgh photoshoot to create incredible wedding photographs. We know which locations work together, the quickest routes between them and where we can create variety without trekking halfway across the city. Often, twenty relaxed minutes in the right places is worth far more than an hour spent chasing locations.

When Plan A Becomes Plan B
Road closures, tourists, wind, rain, scaffolding — Edinburgh occasionally likes to keep wedding photographers entertained. Knowing the city means we can change plans quickly without turning it into a drama. You shouldn’t need to think about any of that on your wedding day. That’s our job.

Knowing Where to Go — and When
Edinburgh changes enormously throughout the day and year. The Royal Mile on a quiet winter afternoon is very different from a Saturday during the Festival. After hundreds of weddings here, we know when favourite locations are likely to be packed, where the light works best and the quieter alternatives that can be every bit as beautiful.

166 Weddings at Edinburgh City Chambers — and Counting
Edinburgh City Chambers is the venue we know best. We’ve photographed 166 weddings at City Chambers, from tiny two-person elopements to larger celebrations surrounded by family and friends. After so many weddings in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town, we know the ceremony rooms, the best nearby photo locations, quieter alternatives when the Royal Mile is packed and exactly where to head when Edinburgh’s weather decides not to cooperate.
If you’re planning to get married here, our Edinburgh City Chambers wedding photography guide shares what we’ve learned from photographing 166 weddings there — including our favourite locations, practical advice and real City Chambers weddings.

We photograph most often in Edinburgh, but we regularly travel throughout Scotland for weddings.
We’ve worked at venues across Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, Fife and the Scottish Borders, as well as weddings further afield across Scotland.

Edinburgh Wedding Photography: Frequently Asked Questions
How would you describe your wedding photography style?
Our style combines natural documentary photography with relaxed, gently directed portraits. For most of the day, we photograph what’s happening without interrupting it. When it’s time for your couple portraits, we’ll give you enough guidance to help you feel comfortable without making anything look stiff or over-posed.
You can read more about our editorial and documentary wedding photography approach.
What happens if it rains on our wedding day in Edinburgh?
Rain doesn’t concern us. After hundreds of weddings in Edinburgh, we know plenty of covered locations and indoor alternatives, and we’re used to changing plans quickly when the weather turns.
Sometimes a short spell of rain can also create great photographs, so if you’re happy to brave it for a few minutes, we’ll make the most of it without keeping you outside any longer than necessary.
Do you have experience with intimate Edinburgh elopements and City Chambers weddings?
Yes — we’ve photographed 166 weddings at Edinburgh City Chambers, from ceremonies with just the couple to larger celebrations with family and friends.
We know the ceremony rooms, nearby photography locations and quieter alternatives when the Royal Mile is busy, and we offer shorter coverage options for smaller weddings and elopements.
Our Edinburgh City Chambers wedding guide and Edinburgh elopement guide have more practical advice if you’re planning either.
We’re a bit camera-shy—how do you help us feel relaxed for our portraits?
Most of the couples we photograph tell us they’re not naturally comfortable in front of a camera. You don’t need to know how to pose — we’ll give you simple guidance when you need it and keep things relaxed rather than constantly directing you.
We also keep your portrait time efficient, so you can get back to enjoying the wedding instead of spending ages having photos taken.
How long will it take to see our final wedding photos?
We typically deliver your complete, professionally edited wedding gallery within four weeks, and often sooner depending on the time of year.
If you’re happy for us to share a small preview from your wedding, we can usually post a few photographs on our social media within a few days. We deliver your full gallery online in high resolution, ready to download, share, and print.
Can you recommend the best photo locations in Edinburgh for our couple shots?
Absolutely. After photographing more than 500 weddings in Edinburgh, we know which locations work well at different times of day, which are likely to be busy and where to go when the weather changes.
We’ll suggest locations that make sense for your venue and timeline rather than sending you across the city unnecessarily. Our guide to the best photography locations in Edinburgh shows some of the places we use most often.
